Different people have different ideas about how to hang a rifle scabbard on a horse. Maybe its just me but I would not hang a rifle I liked on a horse I liked in this manner.

Too easy to lose a rifle for my liking in that picture Duffy...I prefer mine on the shoulder with stock forward. I also prefer mine on the left side for easy access when I dismount.

Knew a guy who carried his Weatherby that way. Were out one day, stopped for lunch and gun was gone. ;) Lucky for him there was snow so we could backtrack and it hadn't been gone too long.

Here's mine.

you hang them low like that so to avoid the big knot against your knee..they are also safer down there......YMMV I really got to wonder how you suppose that is bad for a horse??? I hang the other way round same level...sometimes on a short coupled horse they can bump against it with their hock climbing...no big deal.

After having a rifle broken in two after the horse slipped on the trail and went down hard I usually carry my rifle on my back, muzzle up and taped. If riding in heavy tree cover I hang my scabbard like the guy in the first picture but with the butt forward.

Here's a horse noob question: Is it legal to fire at game while mounted on a horse?

A very valid question indeed!

Some provinces such as Saskatchewan, consider the horse to be a "vehicle" and as such, (for us mere peasants, not police or game wardens) to carry a loaded firearm aboard them, is a big no-no.
Empty firearms for transportation reasons only.
However, the class of antique firearms throws a monkey wrench into this regulation.
And if you could even legally fire any antique/long gun from a horse, one would hope the critter is used to this very noisy activity.

Legal ? Couldn't tell you, but would you like someone to stand behind you and shoot by your head ?

I always get off and get well in front of my horse. And they are used to me shooting all year long at home.

likely yes, check regs to make sure horseback isnt a "vehicle". but not recommended. also not nice to the horse. their ears are far more sensitive than yours are. and having a rifle blast go off so close to their ears would really hurt and likely get you tossed. some people stuff cotton balls in their horses ears for this, none of the horses i have had would allow that.

Probably legal in most places, but i would check with the horse first.
When they decide they dont like something, it takes a lot of convincing to get them back to where they do.

Pretty tough to hit anything from up there as well. Looks good in the movies though.:) I usually have my wife hold the horses and walk well in front, or leave them tied in the trees while I stalk.

I think it's legal in BC, as a horse is not listed as a "conveyance" or "vehicle", but good points about spooking the horse.

On another note about the sensitive ears; My friend has a range on his ranch, 100 and 200 M. Often times we have to wait and hold our shooting because cows will walk in between the bench and targets. Sometimes we have to shoo them off. Same has happened with deer walking right behind our gongs. Very odd.
