Hey guys, curious what you would recommend for a rifle thats accurate out to 600ish yards.

I handload my own ammunition, and i got a 4-12x Leopould for it already.

Going down to a larger city with a really big gunstore in the next week, just wanted some suggestions on rifle/caliber.

The guns i have right now are:
6mm Remington
S&W 460 Magnum
Ruger 10/22
CZ 452 Lux
Chinese SKS
Mosent Nagant M91/30

The Remington LTR in .308 would be good. It is a bit over 1K, around $1050 I paid for mine I think. I have only shot mine out to 200m, but if you talk to Jamie he will fill you in on its 600m capabilities.

I would be inclined to stay away from over bore cartridges, and choose a round that has reasonable barrel life, a proven track record of long range performance, and tolerable recoil. There seems to be some disagreement on the point, but I believe the .308 Winchester either the standard or the AI version has much to offer, and the same would apply to the 260 or 7-08. If 600 yards is your maximum range match bullets from 150-180 grs will work well in a factory 1:12 barrel, and an advantage of the .308 is that there are so many good .30 caliber bullets to choose from. Once bullets become much longer (heavier) than 180's, a faster twist barrel should be considered - then welcome to the wonderful world of custom rifles.

Savage 12FV in 223. There was an 10fp for sale in the exchange that would fit your needs superbly (same thing different finish).

Was listed as $650 shipped BNIB. Just bed and load some 75gr Amax for it.

No issue with this combo shooting well beyond 600yds and ballistics are similar to the 308.

"...accurate out to 600ish yards..." For target shooting, look into a heavy barreled Savage in .308. Then work up a load using 168 grain match bullets and IMR4064.
600 yards is too far for hunting. However, the same Savage rifle with a lighter barrel and loads using 165 grain hunting bullets and IMR4064 will do nicely.
A variable up to 12X is too much magnification for hunting. It'll do for target shooting though.

i spotted a Remington 700p in .338 Lapua mag for around my price range.

whats the barrel life on the .338 lapua? and is there any advantages for that vs the .338 RUM?

I agree... I bought a used 12FV in .223 off the EE... It is quite comfortable out to 300m... I would love the opportunity to try it at 600m... but there seems to be a bit of a SNAFU with the ORA out here, and I haven't been ablt to try her out... I am confident it will perform well.

For cartridge, I'd say 308. Easy to load well and tweak, tons of combinations for varmint, longrange target and hunting.

For rifle, either a Savage, or Remington, depending what turns your crank.
