Without spending too much ie under 400 what is the best scope I can buy?

Do I go with a Bushnell 4200 Elite, Leupold VX II series, Burris Fullfield II, etc or do I have to spend a bit more?

I will be buying another first hunting rifle (sold my "first") and am thinking of a Tikka T3 lite or just getting a Savage base model / or Marlin XL7 and would like decent optics

Any suggestions ?

TIA

These are all good 'scopes that you have mentioned and no, you don't have to spend more than that. I have a preference for Leupold and if they would get their reticle canting problem under control they would be really great. You're on the right track with the ones that you have picked, just make sure that you can get the proper eye relief when you have your rings and bases mounted. Remember to turn the 'scope up to max power when you do this.
Jim.

The sleeper here is the Redfield Revolution either in 3X9 or 4X12 those are on par or very near with the 4200 serie for less than half the price and they are so clear... They are made by Leopold... JP.

I would stay away from Bushnell. I was out shooting at 200 yards and my viper was clearer and brighter at 200 than buddies elite 4200 was at 100 yards.

Cabela's Canada has a minox 3-9x40 for $399. Uses same german schott glass as zeiss but not paying the extra $100 for the name. +1 on the redfields if looking for something a little less expensive.

Schott provides the raw glass, they don't grind the lenses or provide the coatings, which are much more important that the raw glass supplier. Besides, Schott supplies several grades of glass, so even the raw glass may or may not be equivalent.

You may be able to find a Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest on sale or used. I have seen them for 399.00 US, best $400 you will ever spend on a scope, others will agree.

Yep huge Zeiss fan. Even if you can't find one on the ee or else where try your best to save even a touch more money if you have to to buy a new one. Kelly is right on the money when he says best money you will ever spend. Good luck with your purchase.

I haven't seen any reviews that say the minox is a bad scope, just a relatively new scope, hence the lower price point. Here is a link to a review of 3 comparable scopes by Koshkin who knows more about optics than most people on the planet.

I agree with you on Koshkin's credibility, that is why I posted the same link on the previous page. His final conclusion was:

Conquest is still the "allround champ",

I'm not saying that the zeiss is not marginally better, and koshkin picks it mainly because the other 2 are newer scopes and need to stand the test of time. I'm just saying that for someone looking for glass equal to the zeiss the minox might not be a bad choice and you could save $100,$200 if you wanted the german #4 reticle as zeiss charges another $100 on top for it.

I have both, to my eyes the Zeiss is superior. It's a pretty good, clear scope, but it's not great. I'd put it on par with a VX-II or Bushnell 3200 for clarity. I don't like the large rubber power adjustment ring on the Minox, but that's personal preference.
The Zeiss with Z-Plex for $499 is a steal. The Minox costs what it's worth, IMO.
