Hello all,

I am currently in the market to purchase my first precision rifle. I have narrowed my selection down to 3 rifles, all remington 700's in .308. I am looking at the 700P, the LTR, and the VSF.

I will be usinmg this rifle primarily at the range, however, it will also be what I take hunting when I go. I have read on here that people would not want to take primarily the 700P hunting. Is that due to the wieght of the rifle for packing through the bush? Or is the weight going to be a factor when shooting unsupported?

Also, I understand that due to the shorter barrel the LTR has less muzzle velocity than the P or VSF. Is that going to be an issue when trying to bring down bigger game?

Any help or reccomendations are appreciated. While I am certain I want one of these 3, I am having a hell of a time deciding which one.

Thanks for your time,

Stu

open your mind :) there is a Rem 700 SPS-Varmint on the market...twice chipper than guns you mensioned....same quality for the barreled action...
save money for glass... :)

also...6" shorter barrel will not affect your hunting perposes of the gun

I am getting great groups .3MOA and 2600FPS out of the LTR with 175gr Matchkings,I hunt with this gun and its a nice little rifle built like a tank and not so heavy

the 700P is what it is a great rifle built like a Tank and just as heavy I have owned two of them and they were great shooting guns!!

the VSF is just like the 700P but has no Palmswell on the stock(some people like that)and a fluted Barrel both all three of the rifles have a 1/12 twist Barrel that will do good with bullets from the 147Gr FMJ ball round all the way up to the 175gr MatchKing

What's the stock like on the SPS Varmint? You may not be saving anything if your going to want to cough up for a good stock down the road. There's still some good deals on new discontinued model 700 Varmint Synthetics around for less than $800.

Hey Jamie: I'm not sure if you mentioned it before, but is your 700 bedded and tuned?

yes I bedded it and did the stock trigger down to 2.5lbs:cool:
I think all rifles will do better with a good bedding job;)

Hey stu_hert.

I have used my 308 LTR for a couple of years now. No problems at all. Moose(smaller then some, but still a moose), elk, deer, coyotes, gophers. lol. If I can work out the logistics, I hope to take it on a spring bear hunt.

The rifle has also been on a bunch of hiking/scouting trips.

I shoot 180s almost exclusively. Prior to the LTR, I used a 700 VS in 308, but I had cut the barrel cut down to 20.

I love my 700P. Now I haven't shot it enough (or worked up a reload) to be proficient with it, but a CF sniper I know shot a 1" grouping at 300 on a fairly windy day off a bipod.
