oooook so here we go! I have an old 12gauge single shot....i want to chop the barrel to around 22" (I would lose the bead sight) but I would really like to throw on iron sights for slugs, only birds id be shooting with it are grouse so irons are just fine (grouse would be with shot, not slugs ;) )

I would like to stay away from fibre optics as i feel it kinda ruins the old look of the gun.

anyway anyone have ideas or pointers?

much appreciated!!

As I recall Cooey barrels are quite thick around the 22" mark, so drilling and tapping for after market sight sets(look into William's sights) isn't a big deal. (Wanted to do it with a buddy's Cooey but he kept calling me obscene names and making suggestions about my parent's marriage.)
Plan 'B' would be to silver solder 'em on. Either way it's entirely doable and not horribly expensive. Trick is getting them centred properly. And that's not terribly difficult. Measure the radius of the barrel and try to match it with the sights.
If you want to use it for grouse I'd think one of the folding style rear sights.
And use a pipe cutter vs a hack saw to shorten it. Less filing to get the burrs off and have the muzzle flat and square.

I'd say more like 20 yards. Grouse don't take much to kill them. The pellets on the outside of the pattern then to wander but it's surprising how slowly the core of the charge spreads. At 20 to 25 yards I'd still expect 10 to 12 pellets to hit the bird.

I silver-soldered rifle sights on a shotgun barrel and installed a front blade that I calculated to be optimal.
But I was wrong!
Shotgun barrels are not straight. They arch upwards towards the muzzle.

ill be fine for grouse im usually only 15 feet away from them, i mean i could probably just kick them, but shooting them is funner lol

hrmm didnt think about the calculations of the rear sight vs front post. anyone know how its done, or links?

other option is i just throw on a bead after i cut it (I really want to be able to shoot slugs down it)
