Is it possible to just get the necessities for a gun, like the action and barrel, without the stock. Would it be cheaper?

I am just wondering because I want to get a rifle, but want to get a composite stock for it, like from robertson or mcmillan and save some money in the process.

Maybe some of you smiths out there would know the best way of going about it.

Most factories do not sell barreled actions, period.

If you actually posted what you want, you may get a better reply.

I have customers all the time who will buy a new rifle and then take the barrel off and the stock, simply to build a rifle with the barrel and stock they want. They sell the parts to get back some of the cost.

When you want to do something "custom" it never is cheaper than "factory".

Yea thats what I figured. I am simply wanting a rem700 with one of the above comp stocks.

If you are going for a good stock then you may find it is not that much more (in the big picture) for a quality action (perhaps like a Barnard). At least you would have a quality action that doesn't need to be tuned up. Add it up both ways, if you can go custom I think you will be happier with parts from the top shelf instead of from the bottom shelf. No doubt it wll cost more but add it up with what you want and see what the difference is.
