I am getting into shooting again and am trying to decide what to buy. I would like to start with a .22 lr and later on pick up something like a 700p. Right now, I would like something for plinking and possibly target shooting. I believe I would like something reliable, relatively cheap and accurate. Any suggestions?

CZ 452 series

I don't have a CZ 452, but I keep hearing how great they are. I'm thinking of a Marlin Papoose myself, but that won't double as a serious target rifle, just hunting/plinking. A 452in 17hmr would likely be awesome for target. :)

Just about any 17 hmr will do for accuracy though it is pricy for plinking. The problem IMHO with the plinking/target requirement is the things that make a good plinker gun does not nessesaraly make a good target gun and visa versa.

The king of the plinkers is arguably the ruger 10/22 reliable OK accuracy, with a 25 round mag plinking fun to the max. Take that 10/22 and apply anywhere from $50-$1000+ and you'll go from good to very good groups depending on luck and dollars applied.

From what I read the cz do very good groups right out of the box, but it's not as fun and the fun over in 7 rounds. But it will likly shoot tiny groups with practice.

If you can see if you can try some different ones out, and differnt tyes of shooting. With luck you will get a better idea of how you want to use it, which should give you a better idea of which gun.

A 10/22 wouldn't be a bad choice for a semi-auto. It's not the most accurate 22, but define accurate. Will it hit paper right out of the box? Sure. Will it give you 1/2 or even 1 inch groups? Not likely.

Just my 2 cents.

Yea go with the Savage 10FP, the LE version, theres plenty of calibre choices and stock configurations and the rifle is top notch.

If you only plan to have a few firearms your 22 should match your other choice of rifles. A semi 22 and a semi centre fire, or pump, or bolt action. I have lever action and bolt action rifles and matching rimfires. I do have two semi auto 22s and the only time they get use is when my daughters want to play. And one of them really likes my 9422.
That's my opinion.

I just got the heavy barrel 10-22, i don't really have any interest in customizing it any further, but it sure has made shooting fun. I find it a little hard on ammo though, or maybe it's me!! It is fairly good in terms of accuracy, I found that it started to shoot quite a bit better after the barrel had about 100 shots through it. The other thing is I find that with the muzzle heavy feel of it, it points nice.

You might as well get a 10/22 as most guys end up owning at least one.

They are great fun for plinking and do well small game hunting as well.

Get a Butler Creek Steel Lips 25 round magazine and matching loader. Trust me they're worth the money.

Go with the CZ 452. I just bought one and it was well worth the money. Accurate, 5 or 10 rd mag and if you have an indoor range available, most only let .22 on them. The rifle I got had a 2.25 lb trigger pull minimal creep (since corrected) and shot VERY small groups right out of the box. The best is it has a very simple mechanical system that doesn't require much manual dextarity to field strip.

Cz 452

I agree with the CZ. I have one, and two people I know have one
and all of them shoot very well. Mine has only shot at 25 yds so far
and 1/4" groups are quit common amongst all three.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the Cooey Model 60. It's cheap and very accurate. One in good shape shouldn't cost more than $80. Just my $0.02. -Jason

Also a great suggestion. :)

Don't start out with a .22, it could get you used to no recoil and next thing you know you've got a magnum eye because of your uncle's .270.

If you want an all around gun, get a .243, as it is good for deer, varmints (with light bullets) and at the limit can be used for plinking if you've got lots of money to burn on ammo.I suggest any model of savage because its cheap, of nice quality and it's got that cool accu-trigger. Don't get lure into the Remington 710, its half made of cheap plastic and breaks real easily which is not good for someone whos starting and might not manipulate the gun as well.

If you want something thats more for plinking and varminting, get a 22-250 or .223. These are ideal for target shooting and varminting because the ammo is cheap, but the downside is that you can't hunt deer, .243 is the legal minimum. Again I would go with savage in something like the 12 series. The website for savage is www.savagearms.com.

It all depends on what you want, new or used, and how is your budget.
Over four hundreds, get a CZ for bolt and 10-22 for semi, you may need to put some money to modifly a $270 Ruger anyway.
Budget around three can go for Savage MarkII BV for bolt and any Marlins for semi. For your information is the Savage Mark II BV is a very accurate rifle with Bull barrel and accutrigger which shoot really nice. Trigun

First, what's your budget. Second, what do you want to do in terms of 'target shooting'?

.22LR is the cheapest ammo to have fun with, and also some of the most accurate. Don't get a CF rifle until you've perfected your riflecraft; breathing, stance, hold, sighting, etc. You can practise lots more with rimfire than you'll ever hope to with CF.
