If you had the choice of buying an older rifle of 'High Quality' in a caliber which is not what you want ( or hate ) OR buy a newer rifle in the caliber that you like, but the rifle is of a lower quality----Which way would you go ?

No one ever regrets buying quality.

Do you hate the cartridge it is chambered in for any specific reason such as you think it is too anemic or conversely recoils too much?

give us the numbers...makes, models, cartridges, and $$.....and then you'll get some response....albeit the opinins you get will be those of the members replying, but you may be able to make a decision with some more info...

A high quality rifle in a caliber you don't like is just tradeing stock. A piece of crap in your favorite caliber is still a piece of crap. Get the quality rifle and wait to trade it for something you want, or just wait for something you want.

New calibers are produced to get people with guns to buy more guns, gunmakers need the market. If there are any new species out there that havn't been killed since the advent of the 22 and the basic military cartridges, please inform me of the season and locale.
Buy quality and learn how to hit a bull's eye in a rolling tire three times in 10 seconds. No stupid not on a car, but have it roll down a hill.

You mean like getting a chance on a smokin' deal on a Weatherby MkV in .300 Weatherby Mag when you already have a Browning .300 Win Mag at home? Kinda like that? Been there done that.

Because Weatherby's don't float my boat, I passed.

I spend my money on what I like & will use.

Without knowing what the rifles and calibers are it's hard to offer advice. If it were something very special and I couldn't live with the caliber I'd consider the rebarreling prospects.

It is very easy to fall in love with a gun.

It is not near as easy to fall in love with a calibre.

Oh that's some of the prettiest words ever spoken........ "love" might be a little strong a word tho...how about "non-###ual man-crush"

x2

That pretty much sums it up. I guess you have to define what you meant by low quality rifle. What is the sense in getting a specific caliber in a rifle that you have a hard time getting decent groups with?

I would do neither, in a perfect world the right firearm would come along eventually, or I would search until I found it.:runaway:

Neither, why would you spend your money on a rifle (high quality) that you dislike or a poor quality rifle, that you will not be happy with.

Wait and buy what you want.

You want what you want ... substitute - hell no !
We all (most of us anyway) work hard for our dough ... get what you want in the very best quality you can afford. You'll seldom, if ever, regret it

Despite what we gun nutz try to convince ourselves, caliber means very little in a hunting rifle (within reason).

If you MUST pick one, get the rifle you want and don't fret the caliber (use good bullets).

Personally I'm a 7mm fanatic, particularily the 7-08AI and 280AI.

However... I know that in a Stainless Rem 700 w/quality stock and Leupold scope and TSX's, I could successfully hunt the rest of my days (if forced to) for Moose, Elk, Bear, Deer, Sheep...with any chambering from the 25-06 Rem and larger with predictable results.

But I personally have EXACT ideas of what I require in a rifle/chambering, and as a result end up having them built....compromises ain't my gig.

Pick up the old quality action you like, and have your dream rifle built!
