This has probably been asked before, but I did some Searches and didn't find anything. Sorry if I'm duplicating.

I have recently acquired my first rifled slug barrel. All my others have been smooth, and had rifle sights on them, which I like fine. This barrel has no sights, but has a cantilevered rail mount. So, I'm trying to decide what scope to mount - not the brand (that will depend on my budget) - just the best type to go with. There seems to be 2 schools-of-thought - use a traditional "shotgun" scope in the 1x-5x range, or use a rifle type scope in the 3x-9x range. My own inclination is to go with the lower power option, simply because I have never ever taken a shot with a slug outside maybe 75 or 80 yards and I can't see any need for higher magnification when I know I'm not gonna be trying to push a slug out to 150 or 200 yards.

Thoughts and opinions?

Thanks. :)

I use a 1.5-4.5x32 on my ss1 slug gun. I prefer the low power for close in or running shots, and the field of view is excellent. Mine is a Bushnell elite 3200, 63' at 100 yards. The firefly is a fantastic option, I I have used them on shotguns, muzzle loaders and crossbows. Before dark, you shine a flashlight through the scope from the eye pc (I hold my hand over the obj lens so I'm not shining a flashlight all over the place), and the large portions of the x hair glow in the dark for 1/2hhr or so. You gain illumination without weight or batteries.

I went with a 3-9x40mm. Because it was in stock over the 2-7x33mm that wasn't in stock (It has a sabot/muzzle loader recticle that I wanted). I chose the variable power over fixed, since I sit at a tree line, have a wide open field on one side (200 yards to next tree line) or dense bush on the other side.

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not the greatest shot, but I will shoot sabots 175yrd on a really calm day. But, I can consistently hit within a 4" circle (I'm sure it's smaller then that, I've never measured) at 125 yards.
