Rifled Barrel Slug Accuracy – 100 Meters

So, we have a thread for smoothbore accuracy ….

https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1913993-Smoorhbore-Slug-Accuracy!-50m-or-100m

Lets share here what works for rifled barrels …

What combination of sabot and rifled barrel did work for you?

Post a picture of the target and your gun ... and with the following information:

  • Shotgun / Model / Make: (Example: Rem 870 Police)
  • Caliber: (Example: 12ga)
  • Barrel: (Example: Hastings Cantilever barrel, 24”, 3”)
  • Ammo / Slug: (Example: Federal Power Shok Sabot slugs)
  • Distance: (Example: 100 meters)
  • Sighting system: (Example: Scope XYZ 4x44)
  • Shots fired: (Example: 5)

Note: this thread is for rifled barrels only!

The Lyman 525 was designed for use with Winchester components. The challenge is finding these obsolete parts, I was able to source some older red 12AA wads, AA hulls. The first pic I used W571 magnum powder and two fibre discs under the wad and on top of the powder charge with a folded crimp. This load yields a modest 1300 fps but the accuracy trumps the slower speed.
I'm now using Herco powder in this recipe with similar results.
One other point, I filled the hollow bases of the slug with wax , it tends to prevent the wad from pushing into the slug and groups tightened up others are filling bases with hot glue but the wax seems easier and less expensive for me.

Amazing....I had no idea slugs in shotguns have come that far in accuracy. Outstanding!

Yes sir! No offense to anyone reading this, but many older guys still think all slug guns shoot like their old smooth bores throwing foster slugs with a maximum effective range of 75 yards.

Smokeeter, I have been thinking about reloading slugs for some time now. Whats the cost comparison between store bought and DIY?

Really no comparison, ie. if your talking sabot loads. The cost factor is what directed me to making my own. $3-$5 a round for factory saboted loads was hard for me to swallow. I think after the initial cost of getting the mold which was around $150 and rounding up the components I'm at a little less than $1 a shot.
Please understand these are not a super duper long range load like some of the factory saboted loads boast about , but they are a solid 100 yrd and maybe stretched to 150 yrd capable. But if I need longer need to reach out and touchem I have a smokeless muzzy for that.

I consider my rifled setup with Federal Power Shok sabots to be my 120 meter gun!
It shoots 2 inches high at 50 meters … and 2 inches low at 120 meters. Meaning, that sabot would still hit the boiler room of a whitetail if I do my part and within that range.

But at 200 meters it would shoot 22.5 inches low ….

And that is a lot of drop …. :-(
