So, whats the deal with rifled choke tubes when compared to a rifled shotgun barrel?
What kind of accuracy can one expect and the next, perhaps dumb question, what type of slug would you use with a rifled choke tube?
you would use a sabot slug as opposed to one of the varieties of rifled slugs. i've heard it said that the accuracy of a rifled choke tube , is not that of a fully rifled barrell, but my experience shows them to be about the same at 40 t0 50 yards.
Good Question.....I've used them both. The quick answer is that for Rifled choke tubes you would want to use a BRI (Ballistic Research Industries) style Sabot slug like the Winchesters or Federals. These look like an hour glass and use a two peice plastic sabot which completely splits in two after it has left the barrel. With these accuracy out of an EXTENDED RIFLED choke tube and 21" barrel should be inside 3 1/2" @ 100 yards. Again this is out of a clean barrel...be sure to keep the barrel free from plastic build-up. A Fully rifled barrel would shoot all styles of Sabots and usually will deliver slightly better groups @ 100 Yards....most important is that they handle the hyper volocity (1900 FPS) sabots very well and even better if the ROT is faster than 1:28"
