A friend is thinking of purchasing a rifled choke for his 870 20ga as opposed to a rifled barrel.

I've never used one so I'm not ever sure which shell, slug is used with these chokes if it is even different that the ammo used with a rifled barrel.

ANyone here have experience with rifled chokes?

they are for sabot slugs in smoothbore barrels

I wanted to try one too, most people will recommend buying an extra barrel as the inch of rifling provided by the choke is helpless (as I have been told)
I still want to try it :D

Save your money, they're useless. Either shoot Foster slugs or get a rifled bbl, would be my suggestion.
I bought one for my 870 12 ga. and rounds are all over the place @ 50 yds. tried about 4 different brands of slugs. FWIW, the Hornady SST's were the least inaccurate.

OBH (oh bloody hell)
I guess I can't be surprised, there is no such thing as a quick fix thats worth a darn.

Thanks guys.

How long is that rifled choke tube?

I have a Browning BPS Game Gun with a 5" rifled choke tube
and it accurately shoots BRI sabot slugs.
I hunted deer with it for 3 years and have complete confidence
under 100 yards or so in it...I just haven't shot it longer than that.

I have the Carlson's, but it's definitely not 5", maybe 3-3.5". Something to look into, perhaps the extra length makes a big difference.

What brand is yours?
