I have a buddy who uses a rifled barrel on his shotgun and was complaning about the price of sabotted slugs. I asked him if he'd tried rfled slugs which are much cheaper and work fine in my smoothbore. We both came up with the same question "Is it safe to shoot them through a rifled barrel" I'm thinking that the slugs would be work fine and not hurt the barrel becouse the lead slug would conform. Any thought before we try it?

slugs

the rifled slugs won't hurt the barrel, lead vs. steel. if they group well, why not? You may have to clean it more often than with sabots.

I gave it a try. The point of impact changed and the group was no better than my chums smothbore with a mod choke. What I did find was it became a real challenge to clean the barrel after the shooting was over.
We have also started reloading our own slugs using Lyman , Lee and .690 round balls, all in standard wads. They work great and are real cheap to shoot if you cast your own. You can buy them from some dealers.
Penetration tests seem to be on par with the factory loads and one load we use will shoot to the same point of impact out to 125yds.
If you or someone you know reload shotgun shells you should give it a try, a lot more shooting for a lot less $$.

257Roberts, I was thinking of loading as well . Do load them in a standard hull or is there a special one for slugs that is open like the factory ones?

Hi shortround,
Std. hulls, std. wads and a std. star crimp.
We use WSF powder, winchester yellow Wads I think and a mec loader.
The lyman shotshell manual has the load data and lee provides data with there mold. Round balls are 1 1/8 oz. and we use a load for shot.
Sorry guys this maybe should be a thread for reloading.
