I have a Remington Model 700 BDL in .223 that I would like to use for varmints. The gun has a gloss finish on its stock and the barrel is polished. I bought it new and I believe that all BDL's are finished this way. I feel like I am carrying a signal mirror when I walk with it in the field. I have had some guys tell me that the gloss finish won't make any difference. I know that Browning has made gloss guns for a long time with success. Please tell me your thoughts. Am I wasting my time going after varmints with this rifle? Thanks:confused:

PS - It is a tack driver.

I have been using for years a Remington 700 BDL 7mm rem mag, same finish like your rifle, I dont have any problems hunting deer or moose with it, you shouldnt have a problem hunting varmints with yours. I have had deer 20 and 30 meters away looking straight at me when I am pointing my rifle at them and they still dont see a glare or shine to spook them away.
All these little things are psycological, dont even worry about these things and just try to enjoy your hunt. You got a great rifle there.
If you were hunting turkey with a shotgun that had that finish maybe then I would say its not such a great idea since the turkey has to come close for a shot.

If you don't like gloss finish on your BDL stock change it to semi gloss or matt with some fine steel wool. Don't think it will make any difference for hunting. Its just a preference thing is all.

I never understand why guys think this. Guys want a rifle that's camo or black with no shine. They will dress head to toe in camoflauge and spray themselves down with scent eliminator. These same guys also mount 50mm scopes on their rifles. Antiglare coatings or not, what do you think reflects more light, a big lens or a shiny muzzle? That's the end pointed at the critter, not the side of your stock. If you want to dull it, that's your choice, but good looking rifles have killed game for centuries. Shiny finish and all. ;)

I like the way that my rifle looks, that is one of the reasons I bought it. I was just looking for some expert opinions on gloss finish. There are a lot of people camo painting guns and manufacturers are making camo and black guns so it made me wonder. Sounds like those guys who told me that the finish made no difference were right. Thanks

Camo sells stuff. You can buy camo thermos's, camo flashlights, ( ) camo underwear, camo goose flags, camo seat covers, camo couches, camo purses. It goes on and on and on. While camoflauge may have it's place, I belive too much emphasis is placed on it. Bill Jordan is a very rich man because of it.

+1 Camo is stylish, & sent eliminator will not eliminate the fact that you just shate yourself upwind of a trophy animal. The gloss finish on your rifle will have little effect on your hunting.

Southwest you might have one of the finest good looking rifles ever made and they can shoot as well as any gun made today, don't mess it up just go and hunt with it
