Rifling in new rifle

Hi

I've been a happy owner of an SKS and a Mosin since July, but today I bought my first "modern" rifle; a Savage Trophy Hunter ( in 308 ).

I put it in my gun vice and inspect the bore, and was surprised to see that the bore is less defined in the Savage than my older rifles.

Is this down to improvements in bore materials, or have I just bought a factory reject

What do you mean "less defined"?

there's this point of view that shallower rifling is beneficial.
I guess it led to the polygonal and 5R rifling.

The rifling is shallow when compared to the Mosin/SKS.

might be more accurate, as less bullet deformation due to the "engraving process" of the jacket into the rifling. I'd pick a crappy Savage over any SKS if you want accuracy.
