So I am looking to purchase a long range varmint gun for yotes and hitting the long gongs at the range. I am still undecided between .22-250, .220 swift and .223. My question is not about caliber, enough people have put in their $0.02 on that topic that someone should be able to retire a millionaire.

My question is about the rate of twist in the barrel. I know that the faster the twist, the better stability for longer heavier bullets, but how does that affect the light bullets. If the twist is too high will it tend to make lighter bullets spin too fast and become inaccurate?

I would like the gun to be versatile, so I want a rate of twist that can handle the broadest range. If anything probably towards the heavier end of the spectrum.

I'm dont have a lot of knowledge on the fast twist light bullet thing but from what I figure it could do two things add spin drift and reduce velocity. I want to build a 22-250 as well and I was going to go 7 twist for the hornady 80 gr because with a 26" barrel It would be very close in ballistics to the 300wsm 155 sierra that I also shoot.

My fast twist 223 (1:8) doesn't like the 45gr ammo like my 1:12 does. It might have to do with the increased velocity of the 45 gr ammo. The 1:12 doesn't like 69gr bullets either. To me there is a need to match the twist rate with a certain range of bullet weights and one rate doesn't seem to be ideal for all. I think that's something they've known since the Hawken rifles.
