Rigging an M1907 Sling For Carry and Shooting?

I have a repro M1907 on my Garand. It was installed incorrectly, but worked fine for many years as a carry sling.

I found this pic on the interwebz:

Some questions:
1) Is this correct/proper? For shooting? For carrying?
2) Should I be able to carry with this arrangement as well as shoot with it? The sling is pretty short rigged like this and carry would be very non-optimal, even with it set as long as it can go.

Any suggestions for sites showing the use of the M1907 sling in more detail?

EDIT: Also found the official US Army method - https://www.fulton-armory.com/faqs/AR-FAQs/sling.htm

The US Army method results in a sling that is simply too short for me to comfortably carry the rifle on my shoulder. Perhaps my sling is not long enough or something else, but it just won't work for me.

Mine I have setup for shooting. It is snug for carrying. I’ve been looking at old pictures lately looking at their bayonets. I’ve noticed the slings appear loose so I believe they have them set for carry. Too loose to use while shooting. Most pictures where in the Pacific during late WW2.

How is that done? Do they hook the short loop to itself and give up the adjustability of the army rigging I posted above?

Not sure. Just what I seen in the pictures. They likely weren’t using them as a shooting aide. The bayonets I was paying more attention to. I’m try to find a short bayonet to add to my collection. I have a long one. Late war seem to have the shorter ones.
