Hi,

My range is starting to shoot ORPS and am I looking at picking up a CZ457 to join in. I think I would like to stay in the production class and it seems the CZ457 MTR is pretty popular. One CZ457 I am thinking of is the version that comes with the MDT XRS stock, mainly so I can resize it easily so my sons could shoot it as well. As it is more expensive than a MTR I was trying to find the US MSRP for this model but can't seem to. It sounds like to be in production the total cost of the rifle and optic can't exceed $1600 USD. Has anyone used the XRS and found a good scope and stayed in the production division?

Thanks!
Chris

You would be best advised to contact "Rick" at Canadian Rimfire Precision Series ( CRPS ). Rick is one of the original promoters of the series known as ORPS ( Outlaw ). He can give you an Official determination of what is accepiible in the Production class. Sorry sending a link is above my pay grade.

Best value for the money is still RITON.
This is what I have on my rifle, a 455 in an MDT Oryx with a MDT 40 MOA rail. There is loads of adjustment so with the 40 MOA I can still zero at 20 yards, and dial up past 300 with room to spare. Brightest, sharpest scope I have ever owned, tracking is 100%. I have shot a bunch of others and this is at least as good as some of the more popular brands, and better than most; I would buy another. This is not my first RITON either, I have a 4-18 power on my 6.5 x 55 varmint rifle that has been impressing me for about the last 6 or 7 years. I would buy both of these again without a second thought.

Tenda has them on for a good price right now: https://www.gotenda.com/product/riton-optics-6-24x50-x1-conquer-riflescope-r3-reticle/

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I also found this spreadsheet. Looks like a 457 MTR and DNT One would be allowed under production. That would be quite the combo! Another option looks to be the MDT XRS rifle for 1099usd and the Arken SH-4K for $529usd and sqeek under the 1650usd limit. Would be easier to add an ARCA rail and adjust sizing for different people.

NRL isn't necessarily the same thing as CRPS/ORPS so caveat emptor. Always check the same rulebook the local match director is using.

Production class in most disciplines means using it as-bought and not swapping in custom parts. Showing up with an MDT chassis begs to get bumped to Open.

Hi, yes CZ sells a “complete” rifle with the XRS. I like the MTR as well but I think the adjustability of the XRS might be good if my sons want to shoot it. The XRS version is showing as $1450 at a bunch of CGN sponsors and the MTR at $1250 (Canadian prices)

Ha definitely don’t want to accidentally get bumped into Open and get destroyed by $5000 guns haha.

ORPS you could run an Anschutz with irons to max out the MRSP Cap and it would make no difference. Production class is the race to make a production gun run with the open crowd in a nutshell.
What was once created to segregate the beginners is now a battle ground to make nationals. 457 XRS with a Discovery Optics scope was spotted a few times at the NRS events.
Anyone telling you otherwise is not seeing the forest for the trees. Go big.

My recommendation is decide on a rifle you like, can afford, fits you well and want to shoot. Then you simply shoot in the class that rifles fits into.

There are amazing shooters in all classes so you are no more or less likely to “win” in any one class over the other. So go out with the mindset to better your self and better your own scores. Trying to buy yourself the best chance isn’t the answer. A great shooter with a basic savage MKII will whop a new shooter shooting a fully done up voodoo or rim X. ORPS is a game less about absolute accuracy and more about perfecting fundamentals in awkward positions and adapting to the obstacle. It’s about time management and not being defeated by your own mind games. 5 hits are better than 10 misses ect.

I been shooting ORPS for three years. I have always shot production because that’s the rifles I can afford. And in all honesty I simply like to shoot more basic firearms. I enjoy shooting unsupported and generally speaking GOOD PRS rifles make lousy unsupported shooting rifles. First two years I shot a Savage B22FV SS. It was fantastic and was never my limiting factor. This year I was able to spring for the rifle I really wanted a CZ457 Thumbhole Laminate. It’s biggest benefit to me over the savage was/is a stiffer stock with truly full floated barrel and better/more magazine options not needed to make a mag change on 12 round stages has been helpful with time management. The rifle Has a Heavy barrel non match chamber and a Purdy wood stock. I mounted an BIG Discovery ED PRS Gen II 5-26x56 scope that punches way above its cost . O really the setup is not perfect and lacks adjustability and I do feel bad using such a nice stocked rifle in tuffer stages. But much like the savage before the rifles faults PALE in comparison to the largest limiting factor “myself”.

My ultimate goal like anyone is to clear a whole course of fire but for now I’d really like to break the 400points in a round. I have come close a few times but yet to pull it off. This year I had set myself a goal to focus on getting into position and on target sooner to be able to make more and better attempts on target. This has resulted in fewer time outs without wasting shots trying to beat the clock.

Personally I’d love to see a “Hunters” class. Second focal pane scopes. No shooting bags ect. Think that be a fun challenge to change up the game. Plan to run my CZ457 CDN this way this winter just for fun.

Lots of great points. I don’t have any illusions about winning, we aren’t even keeping score yet haha. More a desire to be using the appropriate equipment in the right division. Pretty much any rifle will be more accurate than me. But I would like to get something I can use for awhile and not worry about upgrading or being limited by the rifle system.

I am wondering if the XRS version is just available in Canada?
