Hey everybody,

I want to scope my Marlin 925. I want to use a Weaver style scope base that doesn't use the tipoff mounts. And I want a good scope with an AO. What kind of scope and rings do you recommend? And do you know which Weaver bases will fit on the Marlin receiver?

First question. How much money do you want to spend? Money spent on optics is never money wasted.

+1. My CIL/Anschutz 310 wears an older Bushnell 4200 4-16x40AO and it is definitely not too much scope for that rifle. If I was buying a replacement it would be a Bushnell 3200 5-15x50AO or better.

Edit - The adjustable objective is absolutely necessary for rimfire use or you will have parallax problems in close.

If you buy a centerfire rifle scope with AO, will it work well with a rimfire? Or is it best to get a rimfire scope?

Also, do you guys know where I can buy Weaver bases?

My limited experience is that you need a little downward cant to be able to get a 22lr out to 250 yards using a regular run of the mill AO turretted scope. I did mine the redneck way and put 3 layers of electrical tape in the bottom of the back ring. I use the complete base model Tasco Varmint so you may get more adjustment with a better scope.

Centerfire, rimfire AO, same diff since, aside from toughness for recoil, a rimfire scope is essentially a centerfire scope with parallax set at 50 yards instead of 100 or 150 as CF scopes are. The AO lets you adjust the parallax so that it works for both equally well.

Most rimfire scopes without AO are set for a 50 yard parallax. Most of Bushnell's AO rifle scopes are adjustable from 10 yards to infinity. These are right in your price range. I would go with a 3200 or a 4200 thumb adjust parallax. If you want to spend a little more you could go with a Leupold VX-II EFR or VX-III EFR (Extended Focal Range)

Most firearm distributors including all the little mom and pop stores carry Weaver bases and rings. You could also brows the EE for a set. Or contact any of the Banner vendors at the top of the page.

And what kind of rings do I need to go with Weaver bases?

Weaver style rings fit on weaver style bases. And you don't need Weaver. Most manufacturers will make rings and bases called "Weaver style rings" or "Weaver style bases". This is kinda like Vise-Grips. Lots of companies make them but we still refer to them as the original "Vise-Grip".

You will actually be best off to take your gun with you to a shop or get them from a distributor that can do a mock up of the same gun and scope you have to see what works best. You might need low, medium, or high rings depending on things such as clearance between the lifted bolt and the magnification ring/eye piece and the objective lens to barrel clearance.

And what kind of rings do I need to go with Weaver bases?

If you are looking for a quality set up, I would suggest Burris Signature Zee rings. They have a plastic insert that accomodates ring misalignment without bending the scope tube and are available everywhere for around $45-$50. You can spend a lot more, but not gain much over these, especially for a rimfire with no recoil. You can also buy offset inserts that allow you to build in a downward tilt for the same effect as a slanted base if you intend on long range shooting.

I have a Nikon Prostaff 4x on my CZ452. Cant beat the Nikon optics. Super clear scope for under $200. Has the right paralax so just bolt it on.
Very crisp glass to say the least. Have 3 now and still 1 Leupie.

When your talking a .22lr, I would say that a $150 Bushnell Legend should be more than sufficient. If not overkill, unless your into competition. I had a $100 Bushnell Rimfire scope on my Ruger, and it was more than enough for the accuracy of a .22lr . I had no problem in sniping the head off of a Grouse at 30 Yards away.

If your using a $800 Rimfire rifle for competition shooting, then thats a different story.
