What is everyone using, "X", what brand, etc.. Are there any of those cheap scopes on eBay any good at all? I see everyone into the precision shooting is using a higher magnification that what I have ever used. I am still in the process of setting up my 10/22. Anyone have experience with the knock-off Aimpoints and Holosights? Appreciate any insight:) Still impatiently waiting for my new Boyd's stock to arrive;)

I went with a Bushnell product... I wanted something that had the paralax adjustment and a low end magnification of 3 or 4... So, I bought the banner 4-12 and I have been happy with it. Good enough for the 22... But, I do have to admit, my other rifles wear Elite scopes...

Cheers
Jay

It really depends on the application. For target shooting a low power scope without AO (adjustable objective) really isn't too useful and makes it really hard to shoot the gun to its potential. Similar to how a high power AO scope is just about useless for hunting scenarios.

Therefore I have different scopes for different applications. My bushnell 3200 3-9x40 is a great little scope for hunting with my rimfires. Provides clear optics, good windage/elevation adjustments and a good power for hunting.

For target shooting I prefer 24 power. All of my target scopes are AO and at least 20 power. I have a leupold 24X BR, a Weaver T20, and a Bushnell 4200 6-24. All of these scopes perform exceptionally well and are well suited for target shooting. Choosing a favorite out of these would be fairly hard.

For all around shooting though I don't think you can beat a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40. Put it down to 4 for hunting situations and up to 16 with the AO for target shooting.

I personally would not spend my money on just about any scope off of ebay. Generally speaking they are very poorly made and will not last very long. Although it may look like a good scope at the time it really is worth spending a few extra dollars and getting something that will last. Same goes for the cheap holosights. I have made mistakes buying cheap optics such as tasco's, and cheap bushnellls and now regret it. It is better to get something that is reliable and will last long. I wouldn't spend less than $200 for a scope myself.

I really like my Nikon 6-18x40SF Buckmasters...but it's currently sitting on top of my .30-06.
I have two Barska 6.5-20x50AO Varmints scopes on my 10/22 and Savage 93R17, and both scopes have worked well for me, especially for their price.
I have a BSA 42mm red dot sight on one of my other 10/22's, and that one has also been consistent and worked well.

Depends what you want to do. My 10/22 complete with tasco red dot, hits my steel plate targets well at 50 yards, and is deadly on milk jugs out to 100. It's not a precision rig by any means, just something cheap and fun.

I would like to be able to shoot a small group at 50-60m. In all honesty, I am at a cross roads as I also want to start mini rifle action shooting in my area. Up close a red dot would kick ass for sure, but to make a precise shot, a variable would be needed, for me at least. My first choice was a 1.5-4.5x which is on the gun now. I can shoot it really well at 25-30m but I must confess that reaching out further it isn't enough magnification for me. I thought I might have to go with say a 4-12x or something similar and a piggy back mount with a J-point or Docter for up close shooting. the 1.5x is pretty good up close, but for me at least 4.5x isn't enough for reaching out further distances. Are there any scopes that start around 1.5 and go up to 10 or 12x?

I seldomly shoot my guns off the bench, so I don't use anything over 10x (I find them harder to keep steady on target...)

Weaver and Leupold make a nice 3x9AO scope, for a little more $$ Leupold have a very nice 3.5x10AO scope...

Red dots are OK to plink at close range (works good on the shotgun) but I don't like them for target over 20M.

Just my 2 cents,
Mike

holo-sights

I use one of the knock-off hollow-sights in the winter on my 96 Ruger .22 mag. It is good for 100 yards on coyotes we call in. I switch to a K-4 Weaver in the warm months for shooting gophers. The H-sights red dot covers about 4 inches at 100 yards, thats why I switch to the Weaver in the summer. As far as scopes go on E-bay there are some good ones and bad. If you are buying brand name scopes most are okay. The ones made in China or similar countrys are mediocer at best. I have picked up used Bushnells,Tascos and Simmons at reasonable prices. The new ones aren't bad either. You have to do your homework though. When bidding on something it is easy to get carried away and pay too much. Know your prices and set your limit and stick to it. The great thing with e-bay is there is always another item just like it soon to follow. I did pick up one scope last winter that had a jammed power ring. I believe the screw was bent. I was refunded my money by the dealer(it was used). I had to pay the shipping but he knocked off half of the shipping from when he sent it so I couldn't complain too much. He didn't have to. Some dealers don't accept returns so watch out and read the fine print. Also some guys have a beef with dealing with the Americans but I find they are very good. We have good and bad on both sides of the border. For a .22 scope just about any 4x or variable will work as long as it is clear. Remember you are limited to about 100 yards so a 4x 24 power is a bit overkill on a .22 rf. But if thats your thing...well thats your thing...ST...

You will be hardpressed to find a scope with such a wide range of adjustments. The new bushnell 6500's have quite a range of adjustment - but they will likely be way more than you were thinking of spending. The only other scope I can think of is one made by weaver. I can not remember the exact model but It has a 2-10 adjustment range.

For just tiny groups at 50-60 meters, its hard to beat an old steel tubed, Weaver T-10 Micro-trac scope. Of course it has fine crosshairs. On the used market, they are swiftly purchased by those in the know, looking for a reasonable scope, without a big cash outlay. Not the best optics, but fine, positive, repeatable tracking. Also, long and heavy compared to other brands.
It would look odd, on a Ruger 10/22.

For a short period of time, these were standard issue, to USMC Scout/Snipers, Post-Vietnam on the militarized, M40 Remington rifles. This was before, the Unertl X 10 powers became available.

Currently I have one on a Pre-WW2 ES350B, 22 LR Mauser.
Soon we are going to try it out again at 50 meters.

Last week, half inch groups, from the bench, using Lapua Standard ammo, at 50, no problemo!

I have a Weaver Classic Rimfire 4X on my 10/22 which I like quite a bit. I usually only use my Ruger for shooting gophers and casual plinking and I don't really need more than 4X it seems.

With my TOZ78, I use an old Leupold M8 8 power AO varmint scope. Works very very well, the AO adjusts down to 25 meters and the very fine crosshairs make it quite easy to pick off gophers at longer ranges. On my 597 I have a 40 dollar Aimpoint clone that works quite well.

For casual plinking and non-serious targets, 4x up to 10x works fine. If you are serious about 50 & 100 meters +, you will need at least 20x to be competitive. 24x is seen a lot at 100 meter benchrest, with 36x seen on occasion. You may see your "wiggles" more, but it helps teach discipline in holding steady and calling the shot. on anything over 8x, an aadjustable objective is absolutely mandatory. Regards, Eagleye.

I find that once I've used a good scope it's hard to use one that's not as good. Maybe it's because I'm getting older. I think I'll be looking at a Leupold with AO for my next rifle, which happens to be a Sako Quad.

I posted this question in the optics forum, but will try it here....does anyone care to comment on the VXII 3-9x33 EFR Rimfire scope?

I have one and think its a great scope. Excellent optics, very clear and with the AO can be adjusted own for short range work. I thinks its the best .22 scope out there.
