Hi there - first post...
I bought a second-hand Steyr Mannlicher M rifle in 30-06. It has a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 mounted on a 2-piece, quick-release base. The front mount is a square rotated 45 degrees. You place the front ring on the square, 45 degrees off to the right of the breach and then swing the rear in until it clicks on the rear base. If you know something about this base, I'd appreciate it.
I will be using this rifle for deer hunting and the Vari-X is not going to cut it (not enough light). So my plan is to adorn this rifle with another scope, probably a Meopta, definitely something with a 30mm tube. I will therefore need to change my rings - and because of the integration with the base - that too. My initial search of the Internet reveals that only Warne offers a specific combination for my rifle.
Finally, my question. How does one go about determining the proper height of rings to order? The current combination sits about 1" off of the receiver to the center of the scope and is a good fit for me. I suppose the dimensions of the particular scope I want will be important to consider, also.
