What is the best ring height for a 40mm objective scope on a flattop M15? I was thinking of buying warne QD rings for the Armalite I just bought, and need to know what height rings to buy.Any and all suggestions gratefully received.:runaway:

almost any height will work, with a magnafied scope, the optics bend the vision around the front triangle sight, makeing it invisiable through the scope. depending on the sight, i would make sure you test it out before you buy though because some scopes don't bend your vision.

The main issue with selecting scope ring height on an AR is to make sure that you allow the "bell" of the scope (flaring out to the objective lens) to clear the handguard on the AR. Make sure you take this into account.

You'll want higher than normal due mostly to the fact the stock is set higher than most rifles, and is in line with the rail. Anything that sets the centerline of the scope at 1.5" above the stock would be a rough target. You could very well find less or more height a bit more comfortable. You could achive this with rings alone or a combination of rings and a riser block. I think the designated mounts made for ARs like the ones from LaRue or the like are the way to go.

Here's my $0.02....I've found the Armalite one-piece scope mount & rings to be just about perfect for me. :) The off-set helps also in bringing the scope forward so I don't have to put my cheek way back on the comb. Keeping my nose from just touching the CH seems to be the best position for me.

+1. I've got a LaRue mount on one of my AR's, and it's great. Perfect height. Complete adjustability to get the correct eye relief for the scope it carries. Rock solid.

Too bad they're so hard to find up here.

+2 on LaRue. I just installed an SPR-S mount on my AR, containing a Leupold 3-9 MR/T. Height is perfect. The -S is a tiny bit lower than the regular SPR mount, but I find it gives me a better cheek weld. LaRue is available through Socom Supply in Montreal.

Alternatively, I had an ARMS #19 mount with a pair of TPS rings before I got the LaRue. That worked fine as well. ARMS is available from Wolverine in Manitoba.
