I'm close to buying a scope for my Savage 10 Tr and need some advice on choosing ring height. I'm leaning towards the Vortex Viper PST 4x16 ffp. I'm also considering the weaver 4x20 tac ffp, but the warrant in the Vortex seems like it's much better and less hassles.

My question is how does one choose the proper ring height?

Thanks

There's a couple calculators floating around the net. but basically you take the outer diameter of your scopes objective lens cut it in half. Add 2mms for covers. Measure your mounts ( my rail added 12mm) then you will know how much lift you need. the height of your rings.

I looked it up for you and the objective lens on the Viper is 2.62 inches or 57.4 mm, With a 2mm buffer for covers you can go as low as 31mm rings. Thats excluding any barrel taper and the height of your mount. Thats 31mm from the bottom of the ring to the centre. That will be high rings for Vortex. Take the 31mm and then minus any barrel taper and mount height to achieve your maximum lowest ring.

While that calculation works well with getting the objective clear of the barrel....you also need to consider bolt handle interference with the ocular lens.
