So I mounted a scope on my 500 hand gun.I used a weigand combat base and 4 weaver steel grand slam rings.So upon tightening things up last night..well lets say a little lapping is needed. So question...can steel rings be easily lapped. I don't need very much to straighten things out.2ND question..where can I buy online or from a supporting dealer a lapping tool/kit? I checked cabelas but cant find any listed. Supporting dealers chime in if you want!

Wheeler makes a scope mounting kit that includes a torque driver, and lapping tools for both 1" and 30mm tubes. Not real expensive, and pretty handy to have.
I've used a piece of 12" long "precision ground" 1 inch diameter steel rod that I bought from a machine shop years ago. I have used it on about a dozen guns, and just use a tiny dab of valve grinding compound to get things going. I don't tighten the rings down too tight, just enough to let the bar slip and then gently twist away and spin the bar to get the swirl marks running crosswise with the scope tube.
I don't spend a lot of money on things if I don't have to, and I'm willing to bet that there are a lot of 'smiths out there who have been doing the same trick as I have long before the stores started selling them.

I seen a kit like that. Has all the fancy tools with it that I don't know if I would ever use. It was $160.00. Might be handy...might be a waste of funds when all I need is a lapping kit.Undecided on that one!!
Kit also has the pointy rods to verify the rings are aligned. Start with the to check how far the rings are off, then finish with verifying the lapping wasn't a waste of time.
Torque wrench is good for the non mechanics that doesn't have a feel for 20 in/lbs vs 60. Bits, esp. big leuopold one, is handy.
level/level makes leveling precision rifle a lot easier.
So overall I've used everything in my entire wheeler set for 1" and 30mm.

I've used everything in mine except the 30mm stuff.
The higher mag scopes in the 32x and the expensive stuff are often 30mm. If I ever save up for S&B will need 34mm.
Heard too many stories of folks crushing or scratching the heck out of their tubes. Kit pretty much prevents that so even if it save 1 scope well worth it.
