It is for the rifle grenade, if you ever see one of the pre-89 SG550s in the US, they don't have the clip, just a raised portion around the barrel, because under the pre-89 restrictions a "grenade launcher" violated the "sporting purposes" test. Also have a slightly (very slightly) different diameter flash hider for the same reason, iirc. A lot of US-spec imported semi-auto rifles have similar modifications, if you ever wondered.
