I have dropped the hammer on buying a new scope for my target rifle, now the 4-6 month wait for S&B.
I currently have a elite 6500 4.5-30 50mm mounted onto 20 moa rail on my 700.
will be mounting a PMii 12-50x56
to clear the barrel i have 1.2 high rings on the 6500.
after detailed measuring
if i get 1.25-1.26 high 34mm rings I will have 0.15 inches under the scope on the front(currently have .25 with 1.2 30mm rings)
found this height in Steiner and vortex

i cant seem to find what a S&B PMii scopes comes with, do they have lens covers like every other scope comes with?
if they do how thick are the cover walls?
my other option seems to be flip covers like Tenebraex or such. But i cant find how much extra room they need in diameter.
have never used flip covers, but may be more convenient than dealing with stock style covers.
the next rings up I find are some 1.375 nightforce, nice rings, but height is getting really high.

thanks for any input

S&B PMII scopes come with bikini covers. I would say they are about 2mm thick (see pic).

Tenebraex covers are quite bulky and will require more clearance.

barrel is a straight taper from 1.35 at receiver to 1.15 at muzzle 32 inches later
for my 50mm 6500 scope i have .25 inches under it with a 1.2 high ring(base of ring to center of tube)

I have a 12-50 on a 20MOA rail.... I'll go measure for you.

If it's a target gun, forget the covers. At least that's my opinion.

What is your rifle?? What reticle did you get??

ps - good for you for stepping up!!! You won't regret it.

its a rem 700 SA that has had action accurized, ptg bolt installed, krieger 1:10 stainless barrel (32 inch long) jewel trigger
thumb-hole laminate stock. has a 20 moa rail on in . got the P4F reticle and 1/4 cm turrets, its a target only rig as it is close to 10kg
308 win

Totally up to you, but I've given up on covers for my target guns, and in all honesty even for hunting they're just one more thing to delay a shot if they're closed, or get caught on a branch and break off.....just my opinion. If I was trudging through the desert, or jungle, I'd want them.

....anyway....

I just went and had a look at my .338 with the 12-50 on it. It lives in a NEAR alphamount that I'm pretty sure is a "high". I've emailed Richard Near to get his #'s. I bought it with the scope, used, hence why I don't know. I'm not gonna take it apart to test, but I have a "med" (1.2") loose and the one on my 338 is definitely higher. My 338 is a Rem 700 with a 20MOA rail and there is 2.5-3mm between the bell and the barrel. I really don't think you'll be able to get the scope on with 1.2" rings, and definitely not with caps.

Hope that helps. Let me know if I can help or clarify anything. I'll post when I hear back from Richard about the heights.

Edit - after some internetting, I see others post about alphamounts as low at 1", med at 1.2", and high at 1.35" (I wonder if that's supposed to be 1.375"??). Of course, I'll wait to hear from the man himself.

Man oh man, is he, and his work, ever popular!!! I know first hand how beautiful the mounts are, but there not even a single hint of negativity and any post online, from anywhere in the world. Well done Sir......

Richard Near is a Sask farm boy, I remember a neighbor of his telling me about the high quality of his work back when he was just milling stuff for himself.

the spuhr do look nice, but the one I would be getting is not in stock.
also almost double the cost of the nightforce rings I am considering.
Probably not going to get flip covers as I can't convince myself of use of them.

looking at the posted pics of the tenebraex i will likely go for the 1.375 rings

Thats the size rings im using my with TT with tenebreax covers. They clear with like 1-2mm but I have a full length rail.

If you want an affordable high quality set of rings go ATRS I have two sets and am very happy with them.
