Rings with slightly narrower cross bolt?

I'm wondering if, through you experiences, you have come across scope rings with cross bolts that are a few thou narrower than the M1913 spec? The reason I ask is because the scope rail that came with my Barnard P action has slot widths of .2055-.203", which is about 3 thou narrower than the M1913 spec. I love my EGW Tactical rings, but their cross bolt is .206". I'd rather not modify anything, especially if some cross bolts seem to be machined a little on the small side. Thanks all!

Hmm, perhaps just a different rail would be best. You sell EGW picatinny rail extrusions don't you Peter? I wonder if those would fit on my Barnard? I could drill the screw holes on the milling machine, if the radius of the rail would match my action.

Why not just mill the few thou out of the slots and be done with it?
Making up a new rail you stand a much better chance of it not fitting perfectly to the action or having screw holes not align quite right. Even IF the slots are not 100% perfectly true the rings only align from the sides anyway.
Burris rings are renowned for very thin cross bolts, but that opens up a whole new set of issues.

I had thought about doing that, but the rail has a black finish, which will chip off. Obviously it won't affect the usability of the rail, but it will be "ugly". Unless I could remove all the finish and just have it look like an unfinished aluminum rail.

What kind of finish is on the rail?
If it is aluminum anodizing will not chip, if it is steel and has been blued, it will not chip. Paint however......

It must be paint, because a little piece flaked off when I initially set my EGW tactical rings on the rail, that's when I realized the slots were narrower than 1913 spec.
