Well sadly another gun is going to the big scrap metal heap in the sky.

I was contacted by an elderly (and I mean elderly) woman months ago about a supposed Colt revolver she wanted to sell. I was hoping for something nice and old but instead it was Colt Buntline .22 Peacemaker (yes it is stamped Peacemaker).

Anyways seems it belonged to her husband who passed away couple years ago and she found it while cleaning out the attic.

Seems he brought it with him when they moved up from the States back in the 70's I think she said.

See where this is going? The bloody thing isn't registered. I told her I wasn't interested in buying it because I can't buy an unregistered restricted firearm, she doesn't have a firearms license, and the hassle to get the gun into the system just wasn't worth it.

She wanted $300 for it.

She is taking it to the local police station first thing in the morning. :(

I REALLY hate our gun laws when something like this happens.

why can't it be registered?

It's illegal to "buy" an unregistered restricted firearm.

It can be registered though (I posted a How To in the Legalese section here) but it's a massive hassle.

THIS IS STRAIGHT FROM THE CFC/CFP!

Currently there is no official amnesty in place for unregistered
restricted firearms. Individuals wanting to dispose of the firearm
should contact their local police (RCMP). If an individual is in
possession of an unregistered restricted firearm and they wish to keep
it, they must meet the following requirements:

They must have a valid PAL with acquisition privileges to the
restricted level.

They must apply to register the firearm online or through a paper
application form CAFC 998. You can obtain the form or do the online
application at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf. You will need to indicate
"Other" for the type of acquisition and provide details- from whom you
acquired the firearm and when. Please indicate Amnesty on the top of
the form or in spot for type of acquisition if doing an online
application.

These applications are forwarded to the registry for approval, and they
will be the ones to investigate and decide on the application.

Before the firearm can be registered, it will need to be verified by an
approved verifier.

If you cared about it that much you wouldn't let it get chopped......

This thread is lame.

Who says I care about it that much? If it was something like an 1880's Colt Peacemaker 45 then yeah I'd probably do everything in my power.

But if the CFO doesn't approve the registration then you're out whatever money you donated to the owner for finding it.

It just sucks about our gun laws as they stand.

But if I really want a Colt Buntline I can get one in the same shape that is already registered for about $300.

Then why did you bother starting this thread if you really don't care about it that much. BTW We already know our gun laws suck compared to the US.....

I would have just offered her half of what she wanted and went through the hassle. If its going to get chopped anyways...

here's a picture she sent me:

just register it. We see guns like this all the time.

Send me the details. I can sort it out in 5 mins.

shame to see a gun go to the scrapper.

If you're saying that it's not hard to get it all legalized then I'll call her up and tell her not to take it in, that I'll take it and get it registered.

If it was an 1880 then you wouldnt need anything. On the cfc site it says anything older then 1898 is an antique

Read the law again:

manufactured before 1898 that can discharge centre-fire cartridges, other than a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 32 Short Colt, 32 Long Colt, 32 Smith and Wesson, 32 Smith and Wesson Long, 32-20 Winchester, 38 Smith and Wesson; 38 Short Colt, 38 Long Colt, 38-40 Winchester, 44-40 Winchester, or 45 Colt cartridges

So about the only Colt Single action that is an antique would be one chambered in .41 Colt
