RMR mount on Marlin 1894

I have a Marlin 1894 CST and want to put an RMR on it. Ideally I'd like to mount it direct to the receiver and avoid using a rail, but if that's my only option then I'll go down that road.

Any mounting suggestions?

Are you willing to have the receiver milled and drilled? I don't know that it's possible, but I know a lot of owners who would consider it blasphemous ... If you don't want a rail, that's the only other way to do it.

Check out Skinner sights. They have a mount for the Marlin that uses the 2 front holes on the receiver. They have it for the Leupold DPP, but the bolt pattern maybe the same for the RMR. The American Defence QR base I bought for the Leupold DPP today, fits the Trijicon red dot as well.
