Hey guys,

I have had an XCR for a while now, and since I have owned it, the bolt will not hold open, regardless of magazine type.

Has anyone else had this issue, and if you, how have you remedied it?

Thanks in advance,

Mac

Won't hold open after shooting the mag to empty or won't hold open after you draw back the bolt handle and engage the bolt catch?

wont hold open after shooting the mag to empty. when i draw the bolt back and engage to BHO, it is quite tricky to get it to work, have to use push up with quite a bit of force to get it to work.

how many rounds through it?

what is your gas setting at?

have you tried dialing the settings back to see if it is just the bolt running a little hot?

have you adjusted the screw/height of the BHO?

remove your upper and check the wear.

Sounds like the bolt hold open isn't going up high enough. How beat up is it? Mine looked like it was attacked with a jack hammer after 50 rounds, perhaps your's has been damage to the point it no longer engages the bolt.

Do you have the old style bolt catch?

If so, either the little metal rod that gets pushed up by the magazine follower is bent or the bolt catch post itself is worn.

Get the new style bolt catch from Wolverine. It's much better designed.

My bolt catch was starting to give me trouble as well. Turned out the small bolt connecting the bolt catch to the ambi button was loose. Tightened and added loctite. Works fine.

How many rounds did you end up putting through your XCR in total Armed?
You seem to be one of the major "haters" (lol, kidding!) of the XCR, but one who has actually owned, used and shot one more than once and bases his arguments on facts rather than internet fan-fare.

I checked mine last night, its holding up good, no marks or wear, these new ones seem much better.

Theres always going to be re-designs for firearms, it just seems that the early XCR was rushed into production before all the kinks could be worked out. It's a shame, because I think that it has soiled a decent civilian rifle's reputation.

Thank you for accepting what I say as my opinions based on my experiences.

I'll readily admit that I didn't put a lot of rounds through the rifle. I bought it as a shop gun, put maybe 50 or 100 rounds through it before selling it to the shop. We then took it out shooting one day and killed it after 2 or 3 magazines. that was when the trigger pins piled up.

I've never based my views on the shooting characteristics of the rifle. Most of my displeasure comes from simple observation of fundamental design short-comings.

One other thing to remember is that when the XCR came out, I loved it. I loved the M96 and had hi hopes for the XCR. The XCR was my Holy Grail rifle, everything I wanted in a non-restricted rifle. I bought the first one I could get my hands on. I was so disappointed that it turned a fanboy into a so-called hater.

Now was this one of the first ones or a later model?

Funny, I remember staring at the m96 on the zefarm website when I first got my license thinking "what can I do to get my hands on that rifle?"

I later saw the XCR in a gun mag and thought "hey, those are the same guys that make the m96, I need one."
It too was everything I wanted in a rifle - Non-res, piston, full length rail. Nothing had to be added or changed to get it how I wanted it.

I'm glad I had to wait to purchase one, as all the problems were not yet ironed out. (prob still are not).

I can't think of anything more discouraging than a new $2400 item breaking within a few minutes/hours of use, it'd cause me to be a "hater" too. God, I get worried sick/ angry if I think something might break soon.

based on your time with it, what were the shortcomings you noticed? that is, aside from trigger pins piling up.

Mac, did you just order a new catch?

The XCR I bought was one of the first batch brought in, I think.

My list of complaints, that I can recall:
- Ejector. the whole design and execution just seemed like an after thought.

- Capture pins, or lack there of. The use of tiny hair pins clips to retain key pins was just lazy. Spring detents and/or E clips would have been easily used.

- Barrel retention. I don't care what anyone says, a set screw in a divot just doesn't do it for me.

- Folding stock. Complete garbage, no locking in the open position.

- Bolt catch. Looked like it was beat with a hammer after 50 rounds. Half assed design, loose and wobbly.

That's what I recall.

Ejector/plate - reading around on XCR forums, they put it in there like that so you don't have to send it away to get fixed? some might say it shouldn't ever break, but honestly im glad, because if they do, i don't have to do any sending away.
capture pins - okay, major downfall. the whole 30 degrees hinge thing drives me nuts.how hard would have been to make it like the ar? not very.
Barrel retention - I do see the logic behind this, so users can swap barrels fast and easy, but all that speed etc is lost when you have to re-zero. Also so us regular joes don't have to get other items to work/swap the barrels.
factory folding stock- yet to see/feel a good factory folding stock
bolt catch- way better now I think, love the ambi release.
Two more things I would like to add:

Factory stock - to short. not all of us wear body armor when we shoot, not all of us shoot "nose to charging handle", in fact some of us are 6' 4"
Yankee hill flash hider - crap, loud and obnoxious as can be.
