When I was in Holland 4 years ago, I was somewhat surprised by the lack of anything even remotely resembling security at the museums in general. Part of it, I think, is just the sheer number of museums scattered around, quite often in the form of converted manors that had been bequeathed and dedicated to "preserve the history of subject "X", of which the childless previous owner of the manor had dedicated their lives to studying and collecting."
Large, reasonably well preserved and presented collections, with not much more than standard residential deadbolts on the front doors, and no electronic security. Particularly well endowed museums might have a disinterested, underpaid, immigrant, in an ill fitting security guard uniform, occasionally walking around while they cleaned under their fingernails or some such.
