What caliber would you buy the Robinson Arms XCR in - 6.8mm or 7.62mm?

Remington supports the 6.8, whereas when the surplus ammo for the 7.62 dries up its gone. Reloading is also more supported for the 6.8 as Remington makes brass and bullets for it, but no one makes brass for the 7.62, unless you buy factory rounds from Sellier & Bellot, which is almost $1per round. But it's been hard to find 7.62 in 123gr also, but not hard to find 115gr in 6.8.

Obviously you can see where I'm leaning, but would like to know what the boffins think. Thanks!

My plan was to buy the rifle and extra barrel combinations that listed cheapest at the time.

So if the extra barrel in 5.56 was selling for less than the 7.62 and the complete rifles were still selling for exactly the same price I'd buy the rifle in 7.62 and save a little on the 5.56 kit.

Clear as mud?

Basically buy the one you want to shoot right now and then get the extra barrel kits for any and all calibers your heart desires.

Yah...searching around, maybe the 6.8 isn't as popular as some people like to let on. What's the harm in just getting the 7.62 which you know will always be around, has the knock down power you want but is as accurate as a 5.56 out of this gun, right?

The XCR is available is 7.62 X39 ( Russian) there is lost of brass out there.. Winchester makes it so does Lapua

I inquired about the XCR that Target Sports had for sale and they switched it back to it's original caliber due to lack of interest. I love the idea of an XCR in 7.62 x 39. Seems like a lot of people I talk to think it's a bad idea. I have been told it's stupid to put surplus ammo through such a nice rifle but I disagree. I still am deciding between buying the $699 Norinco M4 in .223 or spending the extra cash on an XCR in 7.62 x 39.

I only see positives about an expensive rifle that shoots cheap ammo... and if you really want too you can get expensive ammo for it.

I would definitely take one in 7.62x39 myself. Being non-restricted at the moment is a good draw for me. I don't have an RPal :( so I can't go and buy any black gun I see. This one looks good and I like it :D

The only thing I would ask is that if all that was available is 6.8SPC ... would it kill a moose at 150-200yrds??

Nice rifle, hope to see more available once I save up $2500 :p

I don't think you'd have much trouble killing a moose at 200 yds with the 6.8. Lots of moose have been killed with .243 and 30/30 which are less powerful...

Yah I'm really becoming convinced it makes more sense to just go with the 7.62. I was wrong thinking there wasn't tons of availability in reloading supplies etc, plus you get the benefit of dirt cheap surplus ammo when its around.

It looks like a sweet gun, but my buddy keeps telling me to just by an SKS, which I think look like crap! Plus they don't have the accuracy which is why I never bought one in the first place. I don't want a cheap ugly inaccurate gun, don't care how inexpensive it is.

Anyone know how the XCR shoots? Supposed to be as accurate as the M4 in 5.56 I guess.

Only drawback I can see is not having 10 round legal mags available like the M4. Anyone know if an XCR pistol is in the works so the rifle can have 10 rounders? :p

I don't doubt the 6.8 would kill just fine, I'm just not sure how you figure the 6.8 is more powerful than the .30-30 and .243.

xcr

My xcr has about 400 7.62 down the pipe and has no problem dumping 10 rnds of the chzech surp into a nice round 3" group @ 100m. not bad with using a non magnified sight(eotech). i'm gonna scoope it and try some of my winnie white box:dancingbanana: and rem soft point:dancingbanana: and see how well it does.

Just from Remington's claims...

"Remington likes to compare the ballistics of the 6.8mm SPC with those of that time-proven deer slayer, the .30-30 firing a 150-grain bullet. Accordingly, the 6.8mm Rem. SPC produces 23 percent more energy at 100 yards, 36 percent more at 200 yards, and at 300 yards, the 6.8mm SPC still retains 1,072 ft-lbs of energy compared to the .30-30's miserly 565 ft-lbs. The 6.8mm SPC is 4" flatter at 200 yards than the .30-30, and in rifles of identical weight, the recoil of the 6.8mm SPC is 30 percent less."

Most of the ballistic charts I've seen show the 6.8 to be roughly equivalent to the .243 though so I'll back down on that one...

Jeff

How does the 7.62 compare to the 6.8 then, in terms of trajectory and energy?

Guess I can go look it up, but if someone wants to post that here in the meantime....
