I broke down and bought the rifle that I posted about earlier.

Now I'd like to find out a little more about it. Its in excellent condition with 90% of the blueing and the wood shows only a few handling marks. C Broad arrow marks on the forestock, receiver and butt. Serial number is 1330928, manufactured between 1943 and 1948. Sling swivels look factory or at least put on by a pro. Certainly not home gunsmith aftermarket. My one concern is the recoil pad. Once again, its not cobbled on, its definitely a pro job but is it original? This rifle was sold to me "as is" with a supposedly broken firing pin and unfired for at least 40 years. However, it goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Can anyone tell me a little more of the history of this rifle or point me to a website. I haven't had much luck.

It looks like you got (extremely) lucky. 8)

The butt stock looks like they took off the (flat, checkered) steel plate & installed the recoil pad without cutting the stock!

If the pad works for you leave it like it is, but pick up a replacement butt plate to keep it proper.

Got a close up of the front sling swivel?
That was a unique PCMR item.

I agree, your rifle certainly looks like a good example.

Front sling swivel is the same as the rear swivel as shown in the 3rd pic down except that it is integral with the barrel band.

how is the bore?
I'm not a very good judge of the bore except that is clean, shiny and not obviously pitted. It seems to throw rounds all over the paper though but that could just be the operator. :) I'll get serious one of these days and bench it properly. I was just shooting off the back porch.
Am I correct in assuming that the recoil pad is not stock? Not that stupid of a question as the EAL's were issued with a recoil pad. I would hate to cut it off and then discover it belongs there.

Thanks MarioP. Why the hell couldn't I find that site? Maybe my Google is broken. :D
However, the Rocky Mountain Rangers did exist because I've talked to oldtimers here in BC that knew all about them. Not much about their rifles except that they were issued 30-30's and were generally considered to be deady shots. As my father put it: "I'd hate to be a Japanese soldier and run into those guys. Some of those old boys could shoot!"
It could be that they were all PCMR and the RMR were just the interior units of the militia. I don't know. That's why I'm trying to find out.

Hey bdft,

Yes the Rocky Mountain Rangers were active in WWII, but the only group to be issue the Win 94 is the PCMR (also called the BC Rangers)... I am writing a book about them and have acquired quite a good amount of documentation.

Here are 2 more links. (the second is a DND document)

When you get that book written I WILL buy a copy from you. As a CDN Ranger myself I always try to find out more about our history. If it helps you at all I have a small paper written on the PCMR. Feel free to read it. The sight requires an update - I just haven't had the time as of recent.

PS: I've personally held and examines 3 PCMR winchesters and all of them had fairly bad bores (lost of frost). The but pad on this .30-30 is not issue but you know what? It was probably attached by the chap it was issued to!

Cheers and congratulations on that rifle. Take care of her bro! Thats a rare piece of CDN history you have there.
