I would like one of these for plinking but am not sure which model to get. Also does anyone know of any dealers with some for sale. I would rather buy from a store then an private sale.

The mosin isn't much of a plinking gun. Surplus is usually 10 bucks a box but it's tough to find, meaning you gotta pay $25 a box for new production. Hard on the wallet for plinking. An sks can be had for cheap and ammo is cheap and avalible everywhere (and probably will be for a looooooong time).

If you do want a mosin though go to tradex. Their banner is at the top of the page. They have a good price and are good to deal with.

As for model you can choose between the carbine or the full length rifle. That is the M 44 and M 91/30 respectivly. It's preference, they weigh the same due to the bayonet on the M 44. It just depends if you like em short or long.

I've got both M 91/30 and Polish M-44, try exchange section on this site if you can find Polish made M-44 esspecial un-fired gun (there is still pleanty of them untouch) get one of this there are top of the line for Mosin rifles.

I have got my M 91/30 from tredexx very good service gun was as on the picture

i have found surplas at 6 for 15 rounds and each 5 rounds was on a stripperclip, cheap ammo does come up

Yah, but not enough of it. Point is there is no reliable supply of ammunition for "plinking" as the OP put it. When I go "plinking" I burn between 50 and a couple hundred rounds. Multiply that by four Sunday afternoons a month and - Yah. There isn't enough ammo.

If you take the time to get set up, roll your owns with cast boolits and fast powder works but there is still an initial set up of a few hundred bucks to get your operation rolling...

+1 on the SKS. Care and feeding is relatively simple and 7.62x39 is readily available. In large quantities. For cheap.:D

You should still buy the Mosin (I prefer the 91/30) just because.

Can't go wrong with an SKS. For less then $500 you get the rifle and 1120 rounds of ammo. If you do a lot of plinking and have around $3000 to spare, some of the larger dealers like Marstar will sell you a full pallet of ammo, I think its 26 crates.

Thanks for some great suggestions guys.

I have an SKS already but want an old bolt I can change the stock out on and play around with.

As far as ammo goes I read on the Marstar forum that they have a large amount of surplus offshore and are waiting on documentation to import it. That’s what made me want the nagant rifle.

Handloading is by far the best way to go with a Moisin-Nagant. Load down a bit for the sake of your shoulder, load .312" slugs for the sake of accuracy, stone the sear a bit for the sake of a decent trigger pull and load your chargers right.
You can have a lot of fun with one and they certainly will fill the deepfreeze cheaply.
