I finally bought this little 410 after looking at it for months thinking about buying it. it was chambered in 2" 410 and has black powder proofs. it had a mirror bore and is in great shape.

i bought this shotgun for a project so i didn't end up firing it as a 410. and through a little mishap its chambered a new round i made up, its like a 297/230 Morris mag imp the case is 22.2mm long and the shoulder is at 15.5mm, opposed to 15mm long and the shoulder at 8 mm in the Morris. (looks like a shortened 22K hornet)

i made a reamer for the 297.230 and it didn't have a pilot on it and some how i managed to get it slightly crooked, so i set the barrel up on the lathe and bored the chamber with a small carbide boring bar.

for this project i used a cooey 82 full length barrel for the liner, i turned it to be a solid tap fit (10.25mm with 12 mm chamber area) into place and then head space on the 12mm counter bore i put into the chamber area

the gun did weigh 3 pound 3 oz with 30" barrel, now its 3 pounds 12 oz with a 27" barrel

i still need to add some sights to the rifle, i want to make a new oversized hinge pin that fits into a counter bore on the far side of the receiver opposed to only threads holding on that side.

if you are interested in machining and old odd guns here is 2 links to others ive done.

I'm pretty excited for how this has turned out. i love the look of the thumb lever and how small the rifle is, the receiver is only 3/4" wide its incredibly small in hand.

i have no idea what I'm going to use it for, but with it being centerfire ill be able to shoot it easy enough, and i can make brass by cutting down 22 hornet brass and neck sizing it.

thanks guys, I'm really excited how this one has turned out. ill get some brass made up here soon. for dies ill probably just make up a body die and a shoulder/neck size die. it will be way simpler to machine and ill set the dies up like a Lee loader system,

I'm not sure what to do about loading for it. the gun has no smokeless/nitro proofs on it and it would have been burning about 35gr of black powder pushing 164gr of shot. this rifle now will be pushing a 40gr bullet with smokeless, i would be nice to see 1250fps, the case is double the size of a 22lr so it should be lower pressure for the same velocity/bore size/bullet weight

i also found out how i managed to get the 297/230 reamer off center. the extractor makes up a part of the chamber so i had cut out just the bore size in the extractor and then installed the extractor and tried to cut the chamber and extractor at the same time. well, turns out the extractor insert made of 1045 ground shaft with a little weld on it is so pretty hard, clearly harder than the barrel so the reamer was pushed off the center line of the bore.

luckily i noticed before i was full depth so i still had some material to work with when i set it up in the lathe and bored it and i machined the extractor in the mill with carbide so at the time i didn't know how hard it was.

today i was getting the extractor deburred and cleaned up and the file has a hard time cutting it. so that's when the off center chamber reason hit me.

What type of sights should I put in this rifle. Try and do a tang sight off the tang like a lever/falling block or a simple barrel mounted shallow V / possibly a semi buckhorn(think cooey single shot 22) ?

I was originally thinking a very shallow V, super simple sight but now I'm liking the idea of a flip up tang sight, but being a rook rifle I don't want the sight to look out of place

Just a simple barrel mount, like you said cooey 22. Think that would fit the rifle the best

Triple folding rear and blade front. Many higher end rook rifles had tang sights and that is what I’d go with. Nice job!

thinking about it ill probably just do a little dovetail rear and front sight, like a single standing rear blade, no elevation adjustment. i added a pic of the sight i want to use at the bottom, its from a stevens marksman

i made a sizing making die today and made a few brass. the process is pretty easy.

i still need to neck ream the brass, and also turn the little shoulder burr off them.

the process is
-trim 22 hornet brass to 22mm long
-anneal case
-use the spacer and press the die side 1 onto the newly annealed brass, this starts to set the shoulder and neck size,
-flip the die over and use side 2, press the case all the way in, until the die bottoms out
-tap the case sized case out

next will be
-turn should burr off case
-neck ream to thin brass so when the bullet it seated it fits the chamber. the neck bras is currently 0.020" thick i want more like 0.012"

next brass I'm going to cut the a mm long, the made cases are 21mm opposed to 22mm long now.

in the pics you can see the steps in making the brass. you can also see a 22 hornet, LR and short cases and a 297/230 Morris

IMO, That would be really classy and will suit the rifle well considering the effort put into it.

At the end of the day, the sights decide the outcome, not the cartridge alone !
