Hello,I'm just starting to relaod for my marlin 1895g 45/70.I have had no previous exprience in reloading so I've read the abc,s of reloading and purchased a lee handloader kit{single cal.type}and got all the components now.So just a few questions,Does anyone know what a 350gr hornady fn with 45gr of imr 4198 will act like,and secondly the specs I have found says a max c.o.a.l of 2.54 whats the min c.oal.Why I ask is because the first one I did I did'nt have the die set up right and pushed the bullet down to far 2.47"c.oal to be exact,will I have to pull this bullet or should it be ok.Any info would be great.................Thanks J

When you seat a bullet too far into the case, you will raise the pressures inside when it fires.
Sometimes to a dangerous level. Don't take a chance. Pull the bullet out & throw it away.
You should be able to salvage the case if you are careful with it.
BTW: Glad to see that you are obviously thinking about what you are doing & not just guessing & hoping.

That is a fairly mild load for the M1895 and should get you about 1850 - 1900 fps. At that level the slightly shorter OAL should not cause any problems, just ensure any more loads are the correct OAL so they feed properly and the crimping groove on the bullet is in the right spot.

stickbow hi mate the measurements you quote are only guidelines one is the max in theory your rifle will take first off you need to find out what your rifle wil really take, ie trim case to correct length seat bullet (no powder or primer) do not crimp try chambering round, alter depth of bullet till will chamber ok............
ok we so we now know what the max col is for your rifle so we need to play around (the fun part) with bullet seating, and powders to find which works best in your rifle , when you find around that works make up a dummy (no primmer or powder) and mark it use it as a bullet stop in your press

That is all fine and dandy in a bolt action or single shot but it is NOT the thing to do with a Marlin - or Winchester - lever action. The rifle is designed to feed cartridges that have a very specific minimum and maximum length. Too short and it will not feed properly out of the magazine. Too long and the same problem arises. That is not a good thing when hunting critters that tend to bite back.
