So I bought a big of mixed headstamp 222 a few months ago, and as I'm going through it I find a bunch of pieces that are already primed, sized ,chamfered and ready to shoot. So I think this great and start loading all of these for my load development on the new 222. So my now I have shot and loaded over 50 of these brass and I'm getting crummie groups. So I happened to be talking with my guru last night and he tells me you can't used mixed head stamped brass for load development because each different case will have a different capacity, giving different degrees of ignition.

So I had some new brass that I went and neck sized and re-did the loads that were lousy and VOILA a couple of real nice groups.
Lesson learned. FS

yeah

Further than that, I do not even work up a load if the brass has not been fireformed in that particular gun

Gee does headstamp really have that big of impact:confused: I have used mixed brass in the past for load development (for plinking) and as long as the cases were prepped properly sized, lenght checked and loaded properly my results have been great.
Pete.....

It's not ignition that is the problem, it is case capacity, if capacity was the same between brands you might be okay, but that isn't what I've found...a large diff. between manufacturers exist and your loads/groups will reflect that.

The accuracy standard for a 222 is much higher that would would be a good plinker group in a 30-30.

in any caliber, it is a good idea to at least sort by headstamp, and then by weight, if numbers are big.

You want similar case capacity and similar neck tension.

Found this out the hard way, I must have loaded and fired 75 rounds with these cases all mixed together. FS

If you still have some loaded just seperate them into groups and you will likely find that each brand shoots a decent group but to a slightly different point.

At least its problem with a real easy fix! :D
