There used to be a good picture install guide on m14forum.com you can check there.
Otherwise just slip the cheekrest on the stock where you want it to sit then use some chalk to mark (on both sides) where the bolt should go through. I would suggest putting the cheekrest all the way down b4 marking with chalk so you will have lots of room for adjustment when it is installed. When you drill the holes make sure you go completely straight, its probably best to drill it half way on each side. thats basically what i did....at least how i remember it.

On both sides? My rooster rest only has slots on one side...maybe an early model?
Anyway it seems like it ought to be pretty straightforward so armed with your advice I think I will probably just go ahead and do it.

what? there are only slots on one side? Mine has vertical slots on both sides and then the 2 cross bolts just go through the stock. I can loosen the nuts on one end and then adjust the cheekpeice up and down. I dont know how else it would even be possible to adjust the cheek peice.
Yep, slots on one side only. It could still be adjusted up and down, but I would guess the both-sides design is probably more secure.
