Anyone ever used a blank to throw a rope with a rifle? I'm curious as I know the navy uses a 45/70 blank in a rope throwing gun. Not sure how this would work, but I presume if I soldered a ring to a copper rod this could be done with a standard rifle.

Any thoughts other than "you're going to blow yourself up?"

"...soldered a ring to..." Don't. Line(the Boat People hate it when you call a rope a rope) throwing guns are re-inforced for that purpose.
Our Boat People used to use a Lee-Enfield with a blank. Likely a grenade blank. Don't know what they use now, but a .45-70 it ain't. Possibly a single shot 12 guage.
The U.S. Boat People use an M14.

Actually, it was at one time a modified .44 Magnum round, but I think our Navy has switched to a .223 round for that purpose.

Well, I was thinking about using an old 22 for that purpose. For grabbing the top of a tree about to be cut down to pull it in the wind or whatever utility purpose a line throwing gun can be used for. I've run into lots of occasions where you toss a rope over something with a monkeyfist or weight on the end and it fouled.

Maybe I just need to work on my aim ;-)

I was thinking of rigging a fishing spool with some line (thanks for the correction sunray ;-)) to a projectile that could be launched with a blank. I was thinking 22 because you can get blanks at a hardware store and I wouldn't cry over boring one (or the end of one) smooth.

Wikipedia article on the 45/70 mentions the navy using a line gun in that caliber. Here's a link I found to something similar (looks like maybe a modified H&R)

I haven't had occasion to throw a line 100 yards or more, but 30 yards accurately up a tree would sure be helpful from time to time.

Heck, it would be a fun way to break into the farm house next time I forget the keys at home too - just go through the upstairs window ;-)
