Hi boys and girls.
I am a bit confused about my 2 Ross trainers.
The bolt when forward and cocked can only be retracked when either fired OR with the bolt release actuated.
My friends 2 Ross trainers, the bolt can only be retracted by releasing the bolt lock if it is fired or not.
I thought mine was correct and he thinks his is????
Anybody please help a confused nut?

I had a Ross 22 here for awhile but I will say it was commercial sporter and not a military trainer. I suspect the only difference would be the wood and perhaps barrel length but I figured I'd mention it.

It functioned the same as you describe. Bolt unlocked when fired or the bolt realease was pressed.

Mine unlocked when fired but it was missing the flat spring for the trigger. Once I made a new spring I had to push the button to unlock the bolt after firing

I have been in contact with the British NRA Historic Arms Resource cntr. They have an extensive collection of firearms. The fellow there was at first of the opinion that the bolt release needed to be used to release the bolt whenever it is in the forward position, fired or not. He took out their very good condition sample and he was surprised to find that the bolt could be opened without the release once fired.
He is going to take it apart and see if he can figure it out. I am about to do that now with mine.
I'll let you know what he says about it.

I took one of mine apart and it appears that the bolt release should hold the bolt whether fired or not. Seems mine is worn and the release opens from the shock of recoil
That's my semi professional opinion.
