I'm finding learning about the Ross rifles very interesting. So I hope no one minds another post about this. This is the bayonet that I recently picked up, which motivated the purchase of the Ross MK III in the other thread.
The bayonet was missing the locking mechanism, but I robbed one from another Ross bayonet that is in poor condition. As you can see, the round nut from the other bayonet is a little rusty, although I suppose it would clean up with oil and a tooth brush. Or maybe someone will have a spare locking mechanism in better condition.
The bayonet is marked 9/13, and the sheath is marked MK II. But the date on the sheath appears to be 1943 (only partially struck). I'm wondering if this might be a WW II replacement sheath? Or maybe the 1943 does not refer to a date? Even though it appears to be a MK II bayonet, it seems to fit and lock on the MK III rifle just fine.
The other bayonet was damaged by aggressive buffing and sharpening before I got it from a friend. This one has not been sharpened or buffed, and I intend to leave it that way, except for gentle cleaning and oiling.
Any insights or comments on the history of this bayonet?
