I have a Ross MKIII and picked up a P1907 Ross Bayonet. The barrel opening is too small on the bayonet, or too big of a barrel on the rifle. The rifle is .303, would that make a difference, or were the MKIII .303s issued with a different bayonet or no bayonet at all?

Cheers!

Ya, it does, but I have seen rebarreled rifles with lugs that aren't meant to have bayonets. So, is this one of those cases, or is it a different model of bayo?

Bayonet for the Mark III was identical in all respects to the earlier bayonet for the late Mark II (which is what you have) EXCEPT for the larger hole for the barrel.

You are on the right track and you now have a bayonet which is rather on the scarce side, even as compared to the one you are looking for. Just keep looking and you'll run into one for sure. Just hang onto the one you have now.... and start looking for a rifle to fit it!

In no time at all you will have Ross Disease, which is well known to be incurable. Palliative care only is available, the best treatment being to go out and buy another Ross. This will keep the awful effects of the disease from manifesting themselves in TOO ugly a form for a few months. Just be sure you know where there is another Ross: a relapse could occur at any time!

Welcome to the club, friend!

I can't recall off hand if there were any differences in markings: just the better 'ole. If you are looking at a pile of them, the difference is very obvious. And there were only the two sizes, so you don't have 47 more surprises coming. Also, they were dated, so look for a wartime date: Mark III production was just starting when the War started.

I once ended up with an early bayonet myself while looking for a late one. It's just about new, so I haven't got rid of it. Need another Ross, need another RossneedanotherRossNEED...

Oh, no! A relapse!

And the pension cheques aren't in yet!

Good luck in your search, friend.

NEEDANOTH......... AAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrgh!

The MkI bt which you have has a step on the crossguard at the rear of the muzzle ring. It will be stamped 08 on the left of the pommel for Pattern 1908.
The MkII bt for the MkII** and MkIII rifles has a straight cross guard and is stamped 11 for Pattern 1911 on the left of the pommel.
