Hello,

I have an old Ross M-10 sporter rifle with cut back wood/barrel and buggered sights that I wanted to drill and tap, to scope it out. The bore is in good shape so I want to give this rifle a new "lease on life".

I went to my local gunsmith (Pro Line Shooters in Calgary) and they said not only was it extremely expensive to do so but that scope mounts are impossible to find!

Now, I've seen at least two gentlemen with scoped Ross M-10's before. Does anyone know what mounts I need/can use for a scope? Model numbers/manufacturers/source would be greatly appreciated!

Also, what kind of scopes are being used on people's Ross rifles out there?

Cheers,
Drach

I have bubba MKIII that I put a red dot on for kicks and giggles. The first choice would have been a 4X scope but like you said it would require drilling and tapping. Even though it is a bubba I wasn't in to covering the ROSS name with the front mount.
I had a damaged sight bridge that I milled flat and put a weaver mount on.The scope I chose to put on was a TRS25 red dot Bushnell it is real light and has integral mount. The bridge mount seems to work well with the TRS, but would like to find a real light 2X or 4X and give it try.
It is a different bird, but no Ross's were hurt in its creation.

There is nothing that was built for this purpose. Everything you will see is custom made or improvised, and "drill & tap". :(

Agreed, the only mount for the Ross would be a custom made one. The improvised I have seen look like a cheap bubba job. You can use a scope mount blank and have it machined, but that = $$$$$.

I have a Ross sporter that had been previously bubba'd by shortening the barrel a little, and having the reciever milled down to remove the sights. I wanted to scope it since it was grouping about 4" with the crappy v-notch sight that someone had installed on the barrel. All I did was degrease the reciever and glue on a one piece scope rail with JB weld, using a laser pointer to make sure things were straight as I went. A couple of days later I hit the range with it, having thrown on a cheap Tasco 4x scope, and the thing shot great; consistently under 2". It's been two years and my glued on rail is still working fine.

That's a good idea.

I have a Ross that was done up years ago and rebarreled into 6.5 303 improved by Epps in the late 50's It has a Redfield mount on it and only has one screw in the rear bridge.
It is the bottom gun in the picture

If you go to Rossrifle.com you will find a few good ideas for installing scope mounts....without drilling(Horrors!) into the rifle. They use a flat plate in the rear sight bridge dovetail(very similar to morrisdcode's description) and fashion another mount to fit the regular back sight dovetail ...it looks impressive and works very well .

Here are morrisdcode's pics. Cool idea IMHO for a bubbaed rifle. Very low impact on the receiver.

Thanks Tom for posting pics.
Any ideas on a 4X power scope and rings that would work with this mount. My concern is that it the sight bridge mounting screws are close together around .600" apart, not allot of support in my thinking. I have seen (pics only) Mosins with similar mounts and wounder how they compare in rigidity.

No. I can measure them when I get a chance, but I think the rear sight area was ground down a bit and re-blued. Haven't had it out of the locker since it was glass bedded some time after these pictures were taken.
