My Ross is giving me fits as of late:

at first i could not chamber a round from the magazine, even with a single round because of angle of the front "ramp" or "lip". The bullet would hit a dead end. After tinkering with the angle of the ramp I can now chamber the first round but not consistently because the bolt seems start pushing the rim and then loses control only to end up closing on an empty chamber. Is this because the mag spring is too weak ?

It would appear my only avenue here is another magazine Assy, Can anything else be done ?. I see Numrich has some assemblies but Ill do a bit more research before ordering.

If I'm understanding you, in your first problem, the cartridge was being caught by the bolt, and driven forwards into the front of the magazine well?

In the second one, you changed the angle of the ramp, but now it will catch the rim of the bullet, then lose it's hold and slide over the cartridge, sliding it back down?

If that's a yes to both, then changing the angle of the feed ramp is only making a bandaid fix for the actualy problem. By changing the angle you only make it more likely that the cartridge will clear the magazine, but not actually make sure it will consistently feed.

I would suspect that you've got a gummed up magazine assembly. Both of the rosses I've had looked like they had never been apart in 80+ years, and were so full of gunk and grease that they barely functioned. Scrubbing them with a toothbrush thoroughly, then very lightly lubing it (don''t want more crud coming back in and making itself at home) would likely solve it.

if you have already cleaned it, and the rest of the magazine, then it sounds like you need a stronger spring, not a whole new assembly. It's possible something is worn, or the spring is simply old and weak. Either go find a "new" ross spring, find any other similar spring (size and a little stronger), or, if you want a third way, shim the spring up a bit with a short "collar" or something else, making sure that it doesn't affect magazine function - though I suspect this last idea would probably make it a 4 rd mag.

Yeah, that was a band-aid solution for sure, The spring doesnt' seem to become completely useless unless I get 3-4 rounds in than its pooched......

Ill try taking the mag apart, it doesnt' seem like its easily taken down, Ill have to play around with it. Better than shelling out 50$ for a century old magazine.

If it's only fussy when fully loaded I'd be lead to think it's just really gummed up and dirty. If you look at a schematic, you'll see that the mechanism is pretty prone to gumming up. At least moreso than the usual zig-zag spring style

I never did get the mag apart but I kept working the spring while spraying some Wd-40 and it was soon feeding reliably. I will have to eventually take it apart I think.
