I just got a sporterized Ross MKIII that was from an estate sale. No serial number on receiver only HG (home Guard) underneath by the screw hole. The stock had no cartouches. Were any of the Ross MKIIIs sporterized at depots?

The follower is seized and the spring looks like it is caked with comosline. I was thinking maybe I should pry off the Retaining springs and slide them up pass the slots, but they don't seem to be holding the follower down in the magazine.
I didn't want to break the retaining springs since parts are scarce. Any help as to how to disassemble the magazine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

H/Gs had the serial on the barrel, not the receiver and their stocks usually marked with the area of service of the Home Guard personnel ie: banks or even Niagara Falls.
MKIII mags are the invention of the devil.
You have to drill out the rivets to get it apart so I would caution against doing it until you soak it in a pan of varsol or equivalent for a day or so and hit it with WD 40.

HG rifles are usually in one of two states: as issued, in nice shape, or sported.
As mentioned, flush the magazine assembly, rather than trying to dismantle it.
A HG rifle will usually have HG and numerals and/or letters on the butt, and HG ###X stamped on the left side of the barrel just above the stock line. Any stock stamps could have been lost when the rifle was sported.

Thanks Guys, for the responses.

I immersed the magazine in varsol for couple of days while I worked on disassembling the trigger group and cleaning up the gun. Gently tapped the follower and it broke free.

Yes, the magazine is over designed and was never meant to be disassembled. Loaded the stripper clip with dummy rounds same way as for my Enfields and the old Ross function flawlessly. It is so smooth compared to the straight pulls of my Swiss rifles and the Steyr. Love it.

No serials numbers on the barrel or receiver, just .303 and Nitro proof on the barrel.
