Acquired my first full length barreled MkIII yesterday. The rifle came to me missing its front sight hood, sling swivel, cross bolt, mid band and windage adjuster in the rear sight. The barrel in it is absolutely stunning though, like brand new. Almost all of the metal is in amazing condition except the bolt which someone painted silver. The stock has been sanded though and most trace of its markings are gone. Also someone cut off the back of the butt and installed a rubber recoil pad at some unknown point in the last century (probably in the earlier part of it too by the looks of the aging of the pad).

I am going to be fully restoring this one. I installed a front sight hood, mid band, retainer, and screw, sling swivel and cross bolt, and replaced the rear sight that was missing parts. I also installed an original handguard (for now).

I'm going to be looking for a really nice fancy piece of walnut to rebuild this one with. It will get a complete rust bluing of all components and everything else that is missing will be replaced. I've waited a few years for the right timing when I've had the money to get a good one and this is it. This will be my shooter MkIII. Next is to find an original to 'collect'.

Took it out for some light today while rock hounding with the family down on the wapiti river.

I plan on stripping the varnish off the stock here in the next day or so and seeing what is lying underneath.

that looks like a nice rifle Brandon ,full length barrel in mint condt is not easy to find, definatly a keeper, gona look nice with a new stock

There is a member that produces new wood for the ross. Can probably find him in the milsurp page.
Good luck! Will be a good project

Beautiful!!! Always funny how bubba can take a dislike to the stock 100 years ago, cut it down and put a godawful butt pad on and throw away some parts, then do absolutely nothing to it and leave it otherwise pristine. That'll look wonderful restored.

Thanks for the kind words on this one guys. Now for the challenging parts, finding a nosecap and a beautiful 8/4x10"x50" blank of highly figured walnut that I can get both a stock and handguard out of. Fingers crossed!

Prophet River has some nice blanks. You should post your budget for a blank as "highly figured" in the length you want is going to be pricey. Nice project well worth the effort.

Yes it definitely will be, unless I can get lucky and find something suitable through one of the bulk hardwood suppliers. Even then I'm expecting the wood to be worth as much as the rifle, but hey, so is is the nose cap!

Has anyone yet found a single nosecap?

BTW, there was a member who offered to make one by lost wax casting. It was in one of the previous threads.

But who has one to copy?

If it's on a rifle, you have to get the front sight assembly off to remove it. Sounds easy right? If it's on a nicely blued rifle, people will not be eager to do that.

Someone would need to have a loose one.

Hwally- do you have one?

I have a special puller for that task btw. Tiriaq did too at one point.

I have a loose one for a MkII that I'm holding onto for restoring my MkI. I may be able to get one soon in exchange for an entire MkII stock set. The one that a member here sold on eBay a few months ago, I should have bought it even though it went for $350 with screws another 50-100 if I remember correctly

Stripped the stock on this one this morning and started adding oil finish on it. Looks much better than the varnish that was on it although it's a bit darker than the handguard now

I can ask Eric the exact details if you like, he's a member on here. He parted out a complete MkIII that was in beautiful shape until some smart one jammed the bolt in it sideways and ruined the receiver and stock. Even with the damage to the stock I think he still sold it around $350

I have a loose nosecap I took of a MKIII. I had it off to do some measuring, thought I could scab something together from press forming some flat bar and welding them together. Not going to lie, I failed at that so far......and then I kind of lost interest in that whole venture.

But I can't lose this nosecap, because I still have the complete rifle it belongs to.

I found a nose cap last year on a wore out gun I got for $80 and I ended up selling the gun for $120 I thought I was getting a good deal I guess I was wrong.
