Ross on the Range

Hi,

Well I finally got out to the range with my "new" Ross MkIII...

And it shot well!

Granted this was my FIRST time reloading... so I was using the following:

Brass: 1F Winchester
Bullet: Hornady 174gr FMJBT
Primer: Winchester LR
Powder: IMR 4895

The groups were very good... using iron sites at 100 yds the groups were:
34.0gr=2.25"
34.5gr=3.0"
35.0gr=3.25"
35.5gr=5.25"
36.0gr=3.0"

Now each group was 8 or 9 rounds (I needed a few rounds to set the sights!)... and each group had 2 fliers high (which weren't counted)... I'm not sure if that's me reloading incorrectly or what... but the core groups were very good... I should add that each powder load was measured individually using my Lyman 1200 powder scale/dispenser...

Also... The brass was FL sized before... and 5 out of 50 cases split the neck...

Is that due to a reamed out chamber? Or do I need better brass??? Or is the pressure too high (the OAL was the minimum in the manual... and my powder loads were 34-36grains... where the max was 41)???

It was hard to shoot with a camera at the same time as the rifle...

I had already posted these... next time I'm out at the range (now I'm hooked so I doubt it'll be long), I'll take some better ones...

The stock has been cut & sanded... but the barrel is the original length...

Next time, try some flat-based bullets like Sierra's ProHunter 180 grainers. Usually, the Ross and Enfields tend to like heavy flat-based bullets.

all ya really need is a nose cap (I dont have anymore...sorry)

I found a nose cap... all I need now is 15" of walnut and a knife to whittle with!

Do you guys think I should re-blue it when I re-do the stock? Or is that bad form?

Looks like minute of moose to me. If I can find the step by step process I used to make forend extension I will PM you. Use of it what you will.
