Hi all,

I just acquired a Ross Rifle R-10 factory sporter today. Only real downside to it was it is missing some parts which hopefully between here and the Ross Rifle forums I will be able to acquire. Here are some pictures for you all to enjoy.

Nice pictures, Thanks for sharing.
I posted a picture of my R-10 sporter in the Hunting rifle forum just the other day when a fellow CGNer posted a query wondering if anyone hunted with one.

I just recently got my hunting licence, this year I want to try bird hunting. Next year I am looking at going for deer, and if I end up doing that, this rifle (provided I can get the parts to aim it) will be the one I will be taking.

IIRC the rear sight was made by Winchester so the elevator will be the same as a Winchester.

You are also missing the barrel band.

If you can find one it would be nice to put it on before the front sight goes on.

Otherwise you will have to remove it to get it on there later.

Ax, good point. I have a front sight assembly I'm going to sell him for it. Too bad I am not really good on the lathe yet or I'd whip a replica band and stud up for him to send with it.

A barrel band is pretty easy to make. Just a tube with appropriate OD and ID, polished with edges rounded. File a flat on the bottom, and silver solder on a nut to accept the screw.

I might give this a try on a day where I have too much free time. That would make a good temporary band until I can find a original or better repro kicking around.

Trouble I had with the last one I made was getting the taper right. I have better measuring tools now so maybe it would come out better. If the taper doesn't match the barrel perfectly it will have one edge raised when installed and that bothers my OCD. Last one I did I bored the inside, then cut the ends down to size. Then I cut all but the nut area off carefully with a die grinder. Finally I finished it with a file and polished it, then rust blued with the rest of the rifle. Worked out nice, but like I say it rocked a bit and that drives me nuts. Ha ha.

The band can be formed on the barrel. Tap it on, then work around the circumference of the band on the tight end tapping with a light, smooth faced hammer. Tap onto the barrel a bit further. Repeat. No hard hammering. Starting with the correct diameter, it will be possible to "walk" the band to the correct position. Polish out any hammer marks.
