I recently received a Ross Rifle 1905 in a gun collection purchase and I am trying to learn everything I can about it. I believe the gun is a "Mark II." Am I correct? The following pictures show various markings on the gun.

I do not see any serial numbers on the receiver. I read that the serial number is normally located on the butt plate, however, I do not see any numbers there. The only number on the gun is a "4698" on the barrel in front of the receiver. in that same area there are the following marks:

1) Crossed flags with a crown up top and an "IP" on the bottom quadrant

2) Crossed Flags with a Crown in upper quadrant, D in left quadrant, C in right quadrant, and 2P in lower quadrant

3) Crown with an I underneath, with a Q underneath the I

The stock has no stamps on the outer area. However, on the top of the stock between the rear sight and receiver there is a 3, upside down Y, and a D up arrow C

The bolt handle has crossed flags with three illegible letters facing the shooter's face. The bolt has a Delta symbol and a 3.

There are a couple parts missing from the gun. First, it looks like there is a small piece of wood missing on the top of the gun between the rear site and the receiver. Also, the sling ring closest to the but of the gun is missing, as well as the screws that hold the upper sling ring and the stacking ring on.

I would greatly appreciated any and all information about this gun. Is there a database somewhere that IDs gun markings for Ross Rifles? Also, if anyone knows where i can find the missing parts that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for any help.

Could you please take a clear pic of the whole rifle from the right side, and a closeup of the right side of the buttstock?
Rossguy will be along to tell you about it.

Ross ID

I'm going to hazzard a guess based on the pics it might be a 1905 MKII*** thats missing the little rear handguard. Is there a number under the wrist area with a U.S.? If so, definetely. Like to see more pics however.

Yep, it's a MKII***. If part of the 20,000 U.S. contract of 1917, it would have a U.S. number under wrist. Any markings remaining on rightside butt?

Cephus-Geoff pretty nailed it for you- definitely started life as a MkII***, and is missing the little chunk of walnut between the sight and the receiver. Now: it does show all expected Military markings EXCEPT what should be on the right side of the buttstock- Two scenarios-1. A previous owner sanded them all out then refinished the walnut, or 2.A slight possibility that it was a Commercial MkII- I have two of them, as illustrated in early Ross Catalogs (go to Cornell Publications); neither show any military markings at all, but do have a commercial range serial on the left side of the barrel. Anything there at all? Just a suggestion when you next post a batch of jpegs- to help those of us who still use dial-up to get our kerosene-driven computers on-line- before you post a photo, use the "crop" feature to only show the area(s) of concern, then we won't need to see a carpet on our screens for ten minutes or so-

Maybe the angle of the photo, but buttstock looks mighty thing. Looks like quite a bit of sanding was done, explains lack of markings, IMHO.

There are no markings on either side of the buttstock, or any other part of the exterior stock for that matter. THe only stock markings are a 3, and upside down Y, and a D up pointing arrow C. The only reason you can see those markings is because they are visible where the missing hand guard piece would be. Sounds like the stock markings were sanded off.

Any estimates as to what it is worth?

Also, any idea where to get the missing wooden hand guard piece and sling rings?

Ross MKII***

Here are some pics of my MKII*** U.S. marked Ross. This was my first Ross and I'll admit I knew very little about them (5 years ago), but I recognized a clean un-molested rifle when I saw it and quickly peeled out the $200 the fellow demanded for it. Think I did ok.
