I have recently picked up a Mk 3 ross rifle that has been sportorized with a worn barrel and I'm kicking around the idea of having it rebarreled and rechambered in 7x57 rimmed. Looking at the case dimensions 7x57r and 303 british are fairly close in dimensions, would the magazine need to be modified to enable feeding of the 7x57r case?

The sporters were also made in .405 and 35 Winchester? Someone else may chime in but I don't see why it wouldn't work.Do you have somebody that can make you up a few dummy rounds? I think regular 7x57 dies ,.303 brass and shellholder is all you need.

I can't see any reason it wouldn't work. Everything looks similar enough that all components should be fine with the new cartridge.

IMHO pick up an 05 R or E or an R or E 10 and shoot .303 which is VERY plentiful. The "sporterized" (read Bubba'd) MKIIIs are barrel heavy and in fact too heavy (even "sporterized") to carry in the bush for deer. You will note that the R and E10s (in .303) have a much reduced contour for very good reason.
By the time you rework a MKIII, and set up for 7mm you will have the cost of one of the above invested in an unsaleable "orphan". See Switzer's auction yesterday for an idea of costs per the above and IFF (if and only if) you are "hell bent for leather" to shoot 7mm out of a .303 contact me (after 9 Nov) as I have an E 10 with a "stove pipe' barrel.

I was given a crudely "sporterized" Ross 303 at 14 in 1967 and carried it for years deer hunting until i got a 243 in 1975. Yes it was heavy and didn't even have sling swivels so I couldn't even carry it with a sling, but it worked.
The potential plan was to install a new barrel with a reduced contour, not to install a barrel matching the original contour if I follow through to rechamber it to 7x57r. I've also been considering installing a new 303 barrel, installing a 308 barrel and loading 303 cases with 308 bullets if feasible, and installing an original contour barrel but reducing the length down to 26 in and doing a reimagined military short rifle.
